A majlis sofa in Boston is made to order, not bought off a shop floor. Sofhu, a manufacturer in Türkiye, cuts each set to your wall measurements, as a raised majlis closer in height to a Moroccan salon or as a low floor sofa, with 32 kg/m³ foam and washable covers. It ships free to Greater Boston in modular pieces that manage a triple-decker stair.

Ask three Boston households what a proper sitting room looks like and you may get three answers. In Revere it is a Moroccan salon, bench height, wrapped around the walls. In a Lebanese or Syrian home it may be a low Arabic sofa with cushions along the back. In Roxbury it may be seating right down at floor level. All three are what people mean when they search for a majlis sofa in Boston, and all three start from the same idea: seating that follows the walls and leaves the centre for guests.
The communities behind the demand
Greater Boston has a large Moroccan population in Revere, which hosts an annual Moroccan cultural festival. Lebanese and Syrian families have been established in the area for generations. Somali residents live in Roxbury, which is also home to New England’s largest mosque.
Each brings its own reference. Sofhu’s style guides describe them without blurring them together: the Moroccan sedari and salon marocain, Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating and Somali Arabic seating. The statewide overview is on the Massachusetts page.
Floor-level or sedari height
This is the first decision for a Moroccan sofa in Boston, and it deserves a straight answer. A sedari is not floor seating. It is a banquette on a wooden base, at ordinary bench height, with a fitted mattress and back cushions. The old Gulf and Yemeni guest rooms seat people at floor level.
Sofhu makes two products, and they feel different in use. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set: a seat mattress on the floor, loose back cushions and armrest blocks. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and built as fully upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters.
| Arabic floor sofa | Arabic majlis | |
|---|---|---|
| Closest tradition | Floor-level sitting rooms | Formal Gulf majlis; nearest in height to a Moroccan salon |
| Getting up and down | Lower; easy for children | Higher; kinder to older knees |
| Eating at a table | Low tray or ottoman | Low central table |
| Look in the room | Open, light, more floor visible | More like a built-in banquette |
Sofhu does not publish standard heights, because sets are made to order; ask for the seat height you want with your quote. The articles on floor seating versus a raised diwan and the majlis seat height guide explain what to consider, and Yemeni vs Saudi vs Moroccan majlis shows how to tell the styles apart.

Triple-deckers and tight stairs
Much of the housing here is triple-deckers and apartments, with stairs that turn sharply and doors that were not sized for a modern sectional. A made-to-measure banquette built as one long piece would be a problem on those stairs. Sofhu’s sets avoid it. They come in sections: a majlis as separate upholstered units, a floor sofa as separate seat mattresses, back cushions and armrests, carried up one at a time and laid out in the room.
The photograph at the top of this page shows the result in an ordinary living room: an L-shaped majlis in a beige flame-pattern weave on two walls, with the wood floor left open. Below is the low version of the same layout, a floor sofa in taupe kilim fabric.

Fabrics and patterns
Moroccan salons favour jacquards and velvets, with curtains chosen to match the cushions. Sofhu’s range covers velvet, chenille, woven jacquard and linen, in kilim, medallion and geometric patterns, and curtains can be ordered with the seating. Covers are zippered, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30 degrees.
The filling is 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, with no springs. Density describes how much material is in the cushion, and denser foam generally keeps its shape longer. Firmness is a separate choice; a softer or firmer feel can be requested.

Ordering from Greater Boston
Sofhu has no store in Massachusetts. Orders are handled directly with the maker:
- Measure the walls for the seating and note bay windows, radiators and doors.
- Decide between a raised majlis and a low floor sofa, and pick a layout.
- Send the details with a room photo and the stair or door width.
- Confirm fabric and quote. The set is made, packed and shipped free.
Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination, so check with Sofhu first. The Arabic sofa hub shows the full range of styles. When you have your numbers, get a quote by measurement or write on WhatsApp.
