In New Orleans the right majlis sofa is one that handles humidity: covers that zip off and wash, fabric that breathes, and a layout that lets air move. Sofhu manufactures Arabic seating in Türkiye to your wall measurements, as a raised majlis or a low floor sofa, with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam. Shipping to Louisiana is free and pricing is by quote.

Humidity is the fact every piece of furniture in New Orleans has to answer to. A majlis sofa for a New Orleans home should be chosen with that in mind: covers that come off and wash, a fabric that breathes, and a way to keep the cushions dry. Sofhu builds Arabic seating to order in Türkiye, to your walls, and ships it free.
Three rules for a very humid climate
The Gulf Coast climate here is hot and very humid for much of the year. These three choices matter more than the pattern.
Removable covers. All Sofhu covers are zippered. The company states they can be machine washed at 30°C. A cover you can wash is a cover that stays fresh.
Breathable fabric. Sofhu describes its linen series as porous, with high moisture absorption and a refreshing feel in hot weather. Its existing linen floor sofa page shows that range. Velvet is durable and easy to clean, and works well in a room that is air-conditioned all summer.
Dry before you refit. Washed covers take longer to dry here than the label suggests. Wait until they are dry through.
The differences between fabrics are set out in velvet vs linen vs jacquard.
Floor-level or raised off the floor
Sofhu makes two products, and the room decides between them. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set that rests on the floor and leans on the wall. It is the more flexible of the two, since every piece lifts and stacks. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height, built as upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters or on a wooden frame.

A wooden-frame majlis carries the cushions on a frame, as in the white-framed navy U-shape above. Air moves under the seat, the cushions are clear of anything spilled on the floor, and older guests find it easier to sit and rise. The trade-offs are discussed in floor seating vs raised diwan.
The families who keep this tradition here
Greater New Orleans has a long-standing Palestinian and wider Arab community. Much of it lives in the Jefferson Parish suburbs of Metairie and Kenner, and many families run small businesses.
When the working day ends late, the gathering at home matters all the more. A room with seating on three walls is where the family comes together after closing time, where guests are given coffee, and where the holidays are kept. The Levantine background to that room is described on the Jordanian and Palestinian madafa page. For a sitting corner at the business itself, see the office majlis.
Fitting the set to your room
Both products are planned along the walls, so the plan starts with the walls that are free of doors and windows.

The teal velvet majlis above is a U-shape in an ordinary living room with a wooden floor and a balcony window. The seating wraps the room, and a pale rug keeps the centre light. That teal, with its striped base and medallion cushions, is the same design as the corner shown at the top of this page; more rooms like it are in the green and teal majlis gallery.

Where only two walls are free, an L-shape does the job. This grey floor sofa sits low, with gold medallion back cushions and an ottoman on a white rug. Colours, patterns and dimensions can all be changed to order, as the custom majlis page explains.
Foam and firmness
The cushions are filled with 32 kg/m³ high-density polyurethane foam and contain no springs or other metal. Density is how much foam is in the cushion by weight per cubic metre; it is not a hardness figure. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer. Sofhu describes its standard seats as firm and lets you ask for softer or firmer foam.
Quote, packing and delivery
Sofhu has no store in Louisiana. It is the manufacturer and each set is made after you order.
- Measure every wall the seating will touch, at floor level.
- Mark doors, windows, vents and anything fixed to the wall.
- Send the measurements and photos for a quote, or use WhatsApp, and say whether you want a floor sofa or a majlis.
The cushions are vacuum packed in sealed plastic for the journey. Open the bags by hand, not with a blade, and the foam expands again. How a majlis is packed and delivered describes each step. Shipping is free. Duties or taxes may apply to imports depending on the destination, so ask Sofhu before ordering.
