The short answer

A majlis sofa for a Malmö home is ordered to measure, not bought from a local shop. Sofhu manufactures the set in Türkiye from the wall lengths of your living room, as a raised majlis or a low floor sofa, in the styles that Iraqi, Lebanese, Palestinian and Syrian families know, with 32 kg/m³ foam and washable covers, and ships it to Malmö free of charge.

Malmö already eats like a Middle Eastern city. The market on Möllevångstorget and the streets around it are lined with Arab grocers and restaurants, and the city is known across Sweden for its falafel. What the shops around the square do not sell is the furniture that goes with the food. A majlis sofa in Malmö still has to be ordered, and the most direct way is from the people who make it.

A majlis sofa in Malmö comes to order, not from a shop

Sofhu is a manufacturer in Türkiye. It has no shop in Malmö and does not pretend to. You send the measurements of your room, Sofhu builds the set for those walls, and it is delivered to your address with free shipping.

Ordering this way has one clear advantage in a flat: nothing is a standard length. A wall that would leave a gap beside a shop-bought sofa gets a run of seating that fits it.

Whose seating this is

Malmö has one of the highest shares of residents with a foreign background in Sweden. Its Iraqi, Lebanese, Palestinian, Syrian and Bosnian communities are large, and Möllevången and Rosengård are the districts most people name first.

For the Arab families among them, the room is familiar: seating along the walls of the guest room, as in the Levant and Iraq, with something to lean back on and bolsters for an elbow. Sofhu makes it as two products. The Arabic majlis, also called a jalsa, is raised, sofa-height seating built as upholstered units with fixed backs, and most photographs on this page show one. The Arabic floor sofa is the low version: seat mattresses on the floor, loose back cushions and armrest blocks. The background is on the pages about Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating, the Jordanian and Palestinian madafa and the Iraqi diwaniya.

Each piece has its own word in Arabic, and it helps to know them when you order. The guide to the parts of a majlis set names them one by one.

What an apartment-block flat can take

Apartment blocks dominate Malmö’s housing, so most rooms to plan for here are in flats. Three questions settle the layout.

  • How many walls are free? One free wall means a single row. Two walls that meet in a corner mean an L. Three means a U is possible.
  • Does the room have another job? If the family also eats and watches television there, keep one wall for that and build the majlis on the others.
  • How many guests come at once? For big evenings, add an ottoman and floor cushions that can be stacked away. They cost far less floor than a longer sofa.

The olive floor sofa above shows the idea in an L-shape: two runs, an ottoman that works as a table, and two floor cushions for the overflow. Remember that neither a floor sofa nor a majlis is freestanding. Each run needs a wall behind it.

Sofa only, or the full set

The seating can be ordered bare or built up with a rug, an ottoman and loose cushions. The chart below shows the same U-shaped floor sofa at each stage.

Starting with the seating and adding the rest later is reasonable, but ordering together keeps the fabrics matched. Sofhu also presents curtains as part of its full sets.

Foam, covers and daily use

Sofhu fills its cushions with 32 kg/m³ foam, which you may see written as 32 DNS. Density is the measure linked to how well foam keeps its shape. It is not the same as firmness, and you can ask for a softer or harder seat. The cushions have no springs.

Covers close with zips and come off for washing at 30°C, as described on Sofhu’s diwan floor sofas page.

Questions

Before you order

Is there anywhere in Malmö to buy a Sofhu majlis in person?

No. Sofhu has no shop, agent or stock in Malmö or anywhere else in Sweden. It makes each set to order in Türkiye and sends it straight to the customer. You choose from photos and fabric names, and Sofhu can talk the design through with you on a video call.

What is the difference between Arabic seating and a Western corner sofa?

Arabic seating is made in runs that follow your walls exactly. A floor sofa is separate pieces with no frame: long seat mattresses, back cushions that lean on the wall and armrest blocks. A majlis, also called a jalsa, is raised upholstered units cut to each wall. A corner sofa is one framed piece in a factory size.

Can I have a higher seat for my parents and floor level for everyone else?

Mixed heights are common in family homes. Sofhu makes the raised Arabic majlis and the low floor sofa, and the two can share a room. Describe who will use the room when you ask for a quote and Sofhu can suggest which run should be higher. It publishes no standard heights.

How many armrests should I order?

It depends on how formal you want the room. One at each end of a run is the minimum. A bolster between every two or three seats gives each guest something to lean on. Tell Sofhu how the room is used and the number can be set in the quote.

Do I need to be home to receive the delivery?

Someone should be there to take the parcels in. Sofhu has not published details of how deliveries are scheduled or tracked for Sweden, so ask when you place the order. The cushions arrive vacuum packed, which keeps each parcel compact enough to carry indoors.
