In Montreal, a majlis sofa can mean two things: low floor-level seating known to Lebanese and Syrian families, or sofa-height seating closer to a salon marocain. Sofhu makes both to measure in Türkiye: the Arabic floor sofa, a low set of loose cushions, and the Arabic majlis, a raised, fully upholstered set. Both come in sections that suit plex staircases, and shipping is free.

Ask for a majlis sofa in Montreal and the first reply is often another question: floor level, or salon marocain? The city has Canada’s largest Maghrebi community, and for many of its families Arabic seating means a banquette at sofa height running wall to wall. For others it means cushions on the floor. Sofhu makes both kinds to measure in Türkiye and ships them free: the Arabic majlis, raised to sofa height and fully upholstered with a fixed back, and the Arabic floor sofa, a low set of loose cushions. The useful thing this page can do is help you choose.
Petit Maghreb and Saint-Laurent: two seating habits
Montreal’s Arabic-speaking communities are not one group.
On Jean-Talon Street East in Saint-Michel, the officially recognised Petit Maghreb district is lined with Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian cafés, bakeries and shops. For many of those families the familiar reference is the Moroccan-style salon: a raised banquette, fitted back cushions and a round table in the middle where the meal is shared.
Lebanese and Syrian communities are concentrated in Saint-Laurent and in nearby Laval. Their reference is the low Levantine set, seat mattresses with backrests and armrests, which is what Sofhu sells as an Arabic floor sofa.
| Maghrebi salon | Levantine floor set | |
|---|---|---|
| Seat level | Bench height, on a wooden base | Floor level |
| Centre of the room | Round dining table | Rug, low table or tray |
| Sofhu equivalent | Arabic majlis or wooden bench set | Arabic floor sofa |
The style pages go further: Moroccan sedari, Algerian salon oriental, Tunisian majlis and Levantine Arabic seating.
Moroccan sofa in Montreal: what Sofhu makes, honestly
A true sedari is Moroccan work: a wooden frame, often carved, with its own mattresses and removable fitted covers. Sofhu does not make sedaris. It makes Arabic seating in Türkiye, and its Arabic majlis raises the seat on an upholstered or wooden base in a similar way.

The camel velvet seat on the left stands on a carved dark wood base with gold rosettes. The champagne damask bench on the right has a walnut-toned base and a gilded crest. Both lift the seat off the floor in the way a Maghrebi household expects. Sofhu also makes wooden bench-frame sets with loose cushions, described on its existing page about wooden bench sets.
What carries over from the salon marocain is the principle that matters most: the seating is made to the wall, corner to corner. What differs is the design language, which is Sofhu’s own. If you want a floor sofa with the mood of a riad, that exists too.

Plex staircases and modular pieces
The typical Montreal home is the plex, a duplex or triplex with an outside staircase. Anyone who has moved a sofa up one knows why modular seating matters here.
A floor sofa has no large frame. It is made of separate seat cushions, backrests and armrests, and it arrives vacuum packed. Each piece goes up the stairs on its own. A majlis is built in sections as well; send a photo of the staircase and ask how the pieces for your design are supplied. Once inside, open the packs by hand, without a blade, and let the foam expand.
The cream and brown majlis at the top of this page lines three walls of a long room, with the backs kept below the window sills. Either product stands against a wall, so measure the solid walls and plan around the windows.
Winter fabric and the foam inside
Montreal winters are long, and the salon is used most when it is coldest. Velvet and chenille are the warm choices. Sofhu describes its velvet as durable and easy to clean, and its chenille as having a very low shedding rate.

The navy and ice blue velvet majlis above sits on a raised gold lattice base. Inside every cushion is 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs. Covers are zippered, and Sofhu states they can be washed at 30°C.
En français
Many Montreal buyers search in French: salon marocain Montréal, canapé arabe, sedari. Sofhu’s French guide to the salon marocain covers the same ground for French readers.
