The short answer

A majlis sofa for a Quebec City home is ordered to measure, not bought from a local shop. Sofhu, the manufacturer, builds raised majlis sets at sofa height, close to the salon marocain, and low floor sofas from your wall measurements in Türkiye, in velvet or chenille for the long winter, and delivers them anywhere in the city with free shipping.

Quebec City is not Montreal. Its Muslim community is smaller, and largely Maghrebi and French-speaking. Sofhu has no shop here, so a majlis sofa in Quebec City is ordered to the room and delivered. Sofhu builds Arabic seating to measure in Türkiye and ships it free, and this page explains how that works for a home in the capital.

Three decisions before you ask for a quote

An order goes faster when three things are settled first.

  1. Seat level. A low floor sofa, or a raised majlis closer in height to the salon marocain.
  2. Layout. One wall, two or three.
  3. Fabric. Something warm for a room used mostly in winter, or something lighter.

The sections below take them in turn.

Floor sofa, majlis or salon marocain style

Many Maghrebi families think of Arabic seating as a banquette at sofa height with a table in the middle. That is a different object from a floor sofa, and it is worth being exact about what Sofhu makes.

Sofhu does not make Moroccan sedaris. It makes two main products. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height on an upholstered base, with tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is a low set of floor-level seat cushions with loose backs and an ottoman. It also makes wooden bench-frame sets. All are built in Türkiye to the customer’s wall measurements. A majlis gives you the height and the wall-to-wall fit you know. A floor sofa gives you the lower, more relaxed room.

A gold star-lattice panel runs the length of the backrest, with a round medallion at its centre.

The caramel piece above is a majlis unit: an upholstered base at sofa height with a gold lattice panel along the fixed backrest. The page on the Moroccan sedari explains the tradition and where the two kinds of seating meet.

Layouts for an apartment salon

The mustard velvet set at the top of this page fills a narrow apartment salon on three sides, around dark low tables. It shows how much seating a modest room can hold when the furniture follows the walls.

Sofhu builds its models as a single row, an L or a U.

Both sets above are L shapes in beige velvet, the left with gold-striped backs, the right with damask panels and tray-top armrests for tea.

Neither product is meant to stand free. Each run is planned against a wall. For details, see L-shape and U-shape majlis layouts and, for tight rooms, majlis for small apartments.

Fabric and foam for snow country

Winters in Quebec City are cold and snowy, and the room will be at its busiest when the windows are frosted.

  • Velvet is warm to the touch. Sofhu describes it as durable and easy to clean.
  • Chenille has, in Sofhu’s words, a very low shedding rate.
  • Suede is described by Sofhu as a good option for the autumn and winter months.
  • Linen is breathable and cool, better for a sunny room in summer.

The filling is 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, with no springs. Density is about how well a cushion keeps its shape over time. It is not a measure of hardness, and you can ask for a softer or firmer seat on a custom order.

Put a rug in front of the seating. It warms the floor where feet rest and ties the set together.

Reading and ordering in French

French is the language of this audience, and the guide to a made-to-measure oriental salon, salon oriental sur mesure, covers the product in French.

For the quote itself, numbers and pictures do most of the talking:

  • the length of each wall at floor level,
  • the position of doors, windows and heaters,
  • two or three photos of the room,
  • a photo of any set or fabric you like.

Delivery to Quebec City

Sofhu has no shop, agent or stock in the city. Every set is made to order, vacuum packed and sent by cargo carrier to your address. Shipping is free. Open the packs by hand, without scissors, and leave the foam to expand. The steps are described in how a majlis is packed and delivered.

Duty or tax may apply on import depending on the destination. Ask Sofhu before ordering how this will be handled.

For the province, see Arabic majlis in Quebec. The Montreal guide covers the larger community there, and the existing page on Arabic majlises in Canada covers the country.

Questions

Before you order

Can I send my enquiry in French?

Sofhu has not published which languages its team works in, so check first. Measurements, a sketch and photos carry most of the information in any language. Write in the language you are most comfortable with, add the numbers and pictures, and ask at the start which language suits the conversation.

I only have room for one wall. Is that still a majlis?

Yes. A single row with a backrest and an armrest at each end is the smallest complete set, and Sofhu makes it to the length of your wall. An ottoman and two floor cushions in front turn it into a place where a few people can sit facing each other.

Does road salt and slush damage the fabric?

A majlis is a shoes-off room, which keeps most of it out. For what does reach the seat, all covers are zippered and removable, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. A darker or patterned fabric on the base is a sensible choice near the entrance.

Can Sofhu make the seating higher, like the salon we had in Morocco?

Yes. Sofhu's Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height on an upholstered base, and it also makes wooden bench-frame sets. They are Sofhu's own designs, not Moroccan sedaris, but they give sofa-height seating along the wall. Say that you want the higher seat when you send your measurements.

Is delivery to Quebec City really free?

Yes, shipping is free worldwide. What is separate from shipping is import duty or tax, which may apply depending on the destination. Sofhu has not published how that is handled for Canada, so ask before you order.
