The first question from Vancouver is nearly always the same: will it fit? In a city where high-rise condos and townhouses are the norm, a majlis sofa has to earn its floor space. It can, provided it is built for the wall it leans on. Sofhu makes each set to measure in Türkiye and ships it free to your door.
There are two products to choose between. The Arabic majlis, shown in the photos here, is raised to sofa height on an upholstered base with a fixed back. The Arabic floor sofa keeps everything on the floor, with a seat mattress, loose back cushions and armrest blocks, and is the lighter of the two in a small room.
A majlis sofa for a Vancouver condo starts with one wall
In a condo, plan around a single solid wall and add from there. Glass takes up much of the perimeter in a tower unit, and Arabic seating is planned against a wall: a majlis is built to line one, and the back cushions of a floor sofa need one behind them. That usually leaves the long interior wall of the living area, and sometimes a short return beside it.
Two layouts cover most apartments:
- Single row. One run of seating with an armrest cushion at each end. It reads as a low sofa and leaves the window wall untouched.
- Compact L. The main run plus a shorter one on the adjoining wall, for a corner unit or a living room with a solid side wall.
Because the backs are low, the set sits under the sightline to the view instead of blocking it. The guide to a majlis for small apartments goes through spacing and storage, and the modern Arabic sofa page shows plainer designs that suit a contemporary building.

Up the elevator in sealed bags
Delivery to a tower is easier than with a framed sofa, because nothing arrives at full size. Sofhu vacuum packs its cushions in sealed bags, so each piece is compressed for the journey. A floor sofa has no rigid frame to angle through a hallway or stand on end in a lift. A majlis comes in sections, so ask how the pieces for your design are packed.
Once inside, open the bags by hand. Do not use a knife or scissors near the fabric. The foam starts to recover as soon as air reaches it. If your building asks residents to book the elevator for deliveries, arrange that when you have a delivery date. The full process is described in how a majlis is packed and delivered.
Persian homes on the North Shore and in Coquitlam
Metro Vancouver’s largest Middle Eastern community is Iranian. It is concentrated in North Vancouver and West Vancouver, where Lonsdale Avenue has many Persian shops, and in Coquitlam. Smaller Arab and Afghan communities live in Burnaby and Surrey.
Persian floor seating has its own form. The traditional backrest is the poshti, a rigid carpet-faced cushion stood against the wall on a room-sized carpet. Sofhu does not weave poshti. What it offers is a floor sofa, an upholstered low seat with cushion backrests, which sits comfortably on a Persian carpet and gives guests a softer place to lean. The Persian poshti page sets out the difference honestly, so you can decide whether a Sofhu set complements what you already own.
You may want to keep a Western sofa as well. A single-row Arabic sofa in a second seating corner, or in the den, gives you both. There are ideas for that on the page about mixing a majlis with Western furniture.

Rain, mild winters and what to cover the cushions in
Choose breathable fabric and wash the covers when they need it. Vancouver’s climate is mild and rainy, so the concern is damp, not cold.
| Fabric | What Sofhu says about it | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Linen | Porous, high moisture absorption | Everyday living rooms |
| Chenille | Very low shedding | Homes with dark floors or rugs |
| Velvet | Durable, easy to clean | Formal guest rooms |
After washing at 30°C, let a cover dry all the way through before it goes back on the foam. Air the room after a full evening of guests. On a covered balcony, Sofhu’s outdoor range uses water-resistant fabric, described as able to handle light rain and moisture. See balcony and patio majlis ideas.
Under every cover is the same filling: 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs. You can ask for a softer or firmer seat.
Townhouses and the room nobody uses
If you have a townhouse, the flex room or the lower-level den is the place for a fuller set. A room with a door and three walls can take a U-shape, or two rows facing each other across a rug, as in the photo at the top of this page. That turns a spare room into a proper guest room for Nowruz visits, Eid or a weekly family dinner.
Getting a quote
Measure the wall or walls at floor level, note the baseboard heaters, outlets and balcony door, and photograph the room. Then send your measurements for a quote or message Sofhu on WhatsApp. Import duty or tax may apply under Canadian rules, so ask about it in the same message.
