Muharraq was Bahrain’s capital before Manama, and it still has many of the country’s best-preserved traditional houses. The Pearling Path, a UNESCO World Heritage site, runs through the old town and takes in merchants’ houses and majalis, the Siyadi majlis among them. People here do not need the room explained to them. A majlis sofa for Muharraq has one job: to furnish that room properly, raised or at floor level, along the full length of the walls.

The Muharraq majlis is a long room

The Bahraini majlis has been described as a long room lined with carpets and cushions, placed so that visitors can be received without walking through the family’s quarters. The larger Muharraq houses have a men’s majlis and a women’s majlis, and some families still open theirs on fixed days of the week. In Ramadan the rooms fill after iftar and the evening prayers, and guests go from one house to the next through the night.

That use dictates the furniture. Seating runs along both long walls and across the end, so nobody has their back to anyone. The centre stays clear for the coffee tray and for people coming and going. The background to all of this is on the Bahraini majlis page.

Majlis or floor sofa, cut wall by wall

A long room exposes a ready-made set at once: the runs stop short or have to be padded out with a spare cushion. Sofhu cuts each run to the wall it sits against. Old houses add their own complications. Walls are thick and not always parallel, there are niches and piers, and doors open where the builder wanted them.

Measure each wall separately at floor level and mark every interruption.

Sofhu makes two products for this room. The Arabic majlis is raised: fully upholstered units at sofa height, with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters, the formal choice for a room that receives guests on fixed days. The Arabic floor sofa keeps the older form: a foam seat mattress that rests on the floor and leans on the wall, with loose back cushions. It does not scratch the floor and has no frame to assemble. Both are modular, so a short piece can close an awkward gap by a doorway.

Inside is 32 kg/m³ foam, with no springs. Density is the amount of material in the cushion, and denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer. In a room that seats a full house every Ramadan night, that is what you are paying for.

Patterns that suit a heritage house

Four directions work well against plaster walls and timber:

  • Velvet with medallions. The teal majlis at the top of this page, with ivory medallion cushions and striped bases, is the raised, formal version.
  • Sadu-pattern red. Sadu is the Bedouin weaving of the Peninsula, in narrow geometric bands. The red floor sofa in the gallery uses an upholstery fabric in that style with a matching rug. The page on the Bedouin majlis and sadu covers its origins.
  • Medallions. Burgundy or navy grounds with a repeating medallion give a formal room without shine.
  • Stars. Sofhu’s navy floor sofa with cream eight-point stars is one of its own designs.

Humidity and care on the island

Muharraq is an island, and summers are humid. Choose covers that can come off. All Sofhu covers are zippered, and the company states they can be machine washed at 30°C; velvet covers should not be tumble dried. In a room that is opened only for guests, lift the cushions away from the wall now and then so air can pass behind them.

Ordering for a house in Muharraq

Send the wall lengths of each room, a photo from the doorway, and the pattern direction you prefer through the quote form or WhatsApp. If you want the set in place before Ramadan, say so in the first message and ask what is realistic. Our iftar and Eid seating plan helps with numbers, and Sofhu has a page on Arabic sofas for Ramadan gatherings.

Shipping is free. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination, so ask before you confirm; the guide to ordering a majlis in the Gulf explains the steps. Sofhu’s page on Arabic sofas in Bahrain covers the country, and the neighbouring pages deal with apartments in Manama and villa rooms in Riffa.

Questions

Before you order

The walls of our old house are not straight. Can a set still be made to fit?

Yes, if you measure with that in mind. Take each wall at floor level, where the seat will sit, and again at backrest height, and note any pier, niche or step in the wall. Sofhu builds from the measurements and differences you provide, and the set is modular, so short sections can absorb an irregular corner.

Can the men's majlis and the women's majlis be ordered together?

Yes. Send both rooms in one enquiry, each with its own wall lengths and photos. Many families choose one fabric family in two colourways, for example a deep red for one room and a cream ground for the other, so the house reads as one design.

Is sadu a Bahraini pattern?

Sadu is the Bedouin weaving of the Arabian Peninsula, made in narrow bands of geometric motifs, often in red, black and white. Sofhu's red floor sofas use a sadu-pattern upholstery fabric in that style. It suits a traditional Gulf majlis; we do not claim it as specific to Muharraq.

How many guests can a long majlis room seat?

It depends on the wall length you give to seating and on how many armrest bolsters you place between sitters. Sofhu does not publish seat counts per set. Send the room measurements with the number of guests you normally receive, and the layout will be planned around that figure.

Does Sofhu have a workshop or stockist in Muharraq?

No. Sofhu manufactures in Türkiye and has no shop or stock in Bahrain. Each set is built to order and delivered to the house. Design questions are handled by WhatsApp or a video call with Sofhu's designers.
