Two ways of sitting meet in Auburn. Afghan families grew up on the toshak, a long mattress on the floor with cushions behind it. Turkish families grew up with the sedir, a raised seat along the wall. An Arabic majlis in Auburn, Sydney often has to answer to one of those memories, and sometimes to both in the same household. Sofhu builds each kind to the measurements of your room and ships it free from Türkiye.
Two seating traditions around one station
Auburn has a long-established Turkish community and many Afghan families, and its best-known building is an Ottoman-style mosque. Around the station, Turkish, Afghan and Lebanese restaurants and shops sit side by side. The homes behind those streets are a mix of apartments and older houses, and in many of them the guest room is still arranged the way it was back home.
That is why this page does not treat “Arabic sofa” as one thing. The right set depends on what your family calls it.
Sofhu’s own range has two main products. The low sets pictured on this page are Arabic floor sofas: a seat mattress at floor level with loose back cushions, armrest blocks and usually an ottoman. The Arabic majlis is the raised version, built as upholstered units at sofa height with tall fixed backs, and one light grey example is in the gallery.
Toshak-style floor seating for Afghan homes
A toshak is a floor mattress used for sitting, eating and sleeping. People lean back on a bolster or back pillow, the balesht, and the mattresses run end to end around the room. The same piece is seat and bed, which is why it is thinner and plainer than a Gulf-style set.
Sofhu’s toshak-style sets keep the long, low seat and use a firm foam core. The filling is 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) high-density foam with no springs. Density is the amount of material in the cushion, not how hard it feels, and denser foam generally keeps its height longer under daily use. The covers have zips and come off for washing.

If you want the set closer to the traditional form, with loose back cushions and nothing fixed between sitters, say so in your enquiry. The Afghan toshak style guide and our explainer on what a toshak is go through the parts, and Sofhu’s own Afghan toshak page shows more examples.
Sedir and şark köşesi for Turkish homes
The sedir of the traditional Turkish house was a raised seat built against the wall, usually under the windows, with the corner farthest from the door kept for the guest of honour. Few Auburn homes have one built in. What families order instead is one of two things.
The first is a wooden bench-frame set with seat and back cushions, which gives the raised sitting height of a sedir. The second is the şark köşesi, the “oriental corner”: an L of firm cushions at floor level, usually in a kilim-pattern fabric. Sofhu makes both. The Turkish sedir and şark köşesi guide explains the difference, and the existing wooden bench sets page shows the frames.

Apartments and older houses: choosing the layout
In an apartment living room, a single row along the longest wall or a short L in the corner is usually the limit. A floor sofa is not freestanding. Every piece needs a wall or something solid behind it, so count only uninterrupted wall, and leave out the balcony door and any built-in wardrobe. Our guide to a majlis in a small apartment has worked layouts.

An older house with a separate front room gives you more choice. A U-shape along three walls turns that room into a proper guest room, with the centre left open for a rug and a low table or ottoman. If the room has a fireplace or a door in an awkward place, an L-shape on the two clean walls is the better answer.
