A majlis sofa for a Kitchener-Waterloo home is ordered by measurement, not picked from a shop floor. Sofhu, the manufacturer, builds each Arabic majlis or floor sofa in Türkiye to your wall lengths, as a single row for an apartment or an L or U shape for a house, fills it with 32 kg/m³ foam and ships it free to Waterloo Region.

Which majlis sofa suits a Kitchener-Waterloo home comes down to one question: are you furnishing this room for a year or for ten? Waterloo Region has both kinds of household. Its Arab and Muslim communities include university students and staff, people working in the tech sector and families who came as refugees, so one enquiry comes from a rented apartment and the next from a family house in the suburbs. Sofhu makes Arabic seating for both, to measure, in Türkiye, and ships it free.
It comes in two forms. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height: upholstered units with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is low: a seat mattress near the floor, loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows. Most photos on this page show the majlis, and two show a floor sofa.
A majlis sofa for a Kitchener-Waterloo apartment
In a rental the right set is the smallest one that still feels like a majlis: a single row along the longest wall, or a short L into one corner.
A single row is one seat run with its backs and an armrest at each end. Add a rug, an ottoman and a few floor cushions, and guests can sit facing each other without any other furniture. The photo below shows a floor sofa arranged that way in ivory and gold.

Three things make a floor sofa practical for a short stay. The pieces are separate, so they go through a narrow door and up a stairwell one at a time. They sit on the floor without legs or a frame to mark it. And the covers unzip for washing when you hand the room back or move on.
If you know you will move, say so in your enquiry. A run planned as plain modules along one wall is easier to reuse than one cut around a bay or a radiator. The guide to a majlis for small apartments goes through the trade-offs.

A majlis is built differently. Single upholstered units like these two, in royal blue with white stripes and in forest green with cream, are its building blocks. A row is several of them side by side.
A full room in a house
A house you own changes the brief. With three clear walls, a U shape seats the most people and leaves the centre open for a tray, a table or children. With two, an L does the job.
The cream and gold majlis at the top of this page wraps three walls of a compact room, which is the point of ordering by measurement: the runs meet in the corners and stop where the wall stops. As a floor sofa in burgundy, with a matching rug and ottoman, the same layout looks like this.

Many houses in the region have a finished basement, and that is often where a full set ends up because the walls are long and unbroken. Before measuring, note the things a basement hides: support posts, the electrical panel, a bulkhead, the door to the furnace room. The page on L-shape and U-shape majlis layouts shows how each obstacle changes the plan.
| Your room | Layout to ask for |
|---|---|
| Studio or one-bedroom rental | Single row, with ottoman |
| Shared living room | Short L in one corner |
| Family room with a doorway on one side | L shape |
| Basement with three clear walls | U shape |
What to send for a quote
A quote needs facts about the room, not a model number. Send these:
- The length of each wall the seating will run along, measured at floor level.
- The position of doors, windows, vents and baseboard heaters on those walls.
- A photo or short video of the room.
- The layout you have in mind and a colour direction.
How to measure a room for a majlis gives the method in detail. Sofhu’s designers can go through options with you on a video call before anything is cut.
Foam and fabric for a Southern Ontario year
Summers here are warm and humid, winters are cold, and the heating runs for months. Fabric choice follows from which of those you notice more in the room.
- Velvet and chenille feel warm in winter and are the usual choice for a basement or a room used mostly in the evenings.
- Linen is lighter. Sofhu describes its linen as breathable and absorbent, which suits a bright upstairs room in July.
- Suede-look fabric is described by Sofhu as a good option for autumn and winter.
Whatever the cover, the filling is the same: 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs. Denser foam generally holds its height and support longer than light foam, which matters when the same cushions are used every day. There is more on how the sets are built on the Arabic floor sofas and floor seating sets page.
Delivery to Waterloo Region
Sofhu has no local outlet. Each set is made to order, vacuum packed and sent by cargo carrier from Türkiye to your door, and shipping is free. Open the packs by hand, without a blade, and give the foam time to recover its shape.
Duty or tax may apply on import depending on the destination, so ask Sofhu how your order will be handled before you confirm. For the wider picture see Arabic majlis in Ontario and the existing page on Arabic majlises in Canada. Neighbouring guides cover London, Mississauga and Toronto.
