The classic Brisbane house is the Queenslander: timber, raised off the ground, wrapped in a veranda and built to catch a breeze. It is a good house for low seating. The rooms are airy, the veranda is half a living room already, and the habit of sitting outside in the evening is local. A majlis sofa in Brisbane has two natural homes, the lounge and the veranda, and they need different sets.
Sofhu makes two indoor products, and it helps to name them properly. The Arabic majlis is the raised one shown in the photographs on this page: upholstered units at sofa height with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set, a seat mattress at floor level with loose back cushions.
The lounge: floor seating in a breezy timber house
Indoors, either kind of set runs along the solid walls of the room. Floor sofas are not freestanding, so each loose backrest needs a wall behind it, and a majlis is planned against the walls in the same way. In a Queenslander that usually means the internal walls, since the outer ones are broken up by doors and casement windows. The olive and ivory piece below is a single majlis unit.
A U-shape on three walls suits a separate sitting room. An L-shape in the corner suits an open living area where one side has to stay clear. A single row along one wall is enough for a unit or a townhouse. Our guide on how to measure a room for a majlis lists what to note down before you ask for a quote.

The veranda: raised and covered
A veranda is where a raised bench earns its place. Sofhu makes wooden bench-frame sets and outdoor benches with cushions in water-resistant fabric, which it describes as able to handle light rain and moisture. Under a roof, on a deck that catches the afternoon breeze, that is a comfortable place for tea.
Keep expectations honest. Water-resistant is not waterproof, and Sofhu does not say the cushions can stay out in summer storms. Bring them in when the weather turns. The outdoor majlis page, Sofhu’s outdoor sofas and benches and our balcony and patio ideas show how these corners are put together.

Subtropical humidity and what it means for fabric
Humidity is the main thing to plan for in Brisbane. Three choices help.
- Breathable covers. Sofhu describes its linen as absorbent and cooling in hot weather. Flat woven fabrics are also comfortable against bare arms and legs.
- Removable covers. All covers are zippered, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. Wash and dry them fully before the humid months and again after.
- Air. Stand the seat cushions on edge from time to time so the undersides can dry.
Velvet is not ruled out. In an air-conditioned room it gives the formal look many families want for guests, and Sofhu describes it as durable and easy to clean.

Brisbane’s communities and the styles they ask for
Brisbane’s Muslim community is long established, with roots on the southside going back to the early 1900s. Today it includes Afghan, Somali, Bosnian and Arab families, many of them in the southern suburbs and Logan.
Those backgrounds bring different sitting rooms. Afghan families know the toshak, the long floor mattress with loose bolsters, covered in our Afghan toshak guide. Somali families who want an Arabic-style sitting room will find it discussed on the Somali Arabic seating page. Arab families tend to ask for a classic majlis with armrests between sitters. Sofhu makes all of these to order, so say which you have in mind.
What is inside the cushions
Sofhu uses 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) high-density foam with no springs. The figure is density, the weight of a cubic metre of foam. It is not a measure of hardness. Denser foam generally keeps its shape and support longer than the light foam used in cheap floor cushions. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer seat and choose the cushion thickness.
