On the evening of Eid, a Roman flat that normally seats five has to seat fifteen. That is the problem a majlis sofa solves better than any armchair: seating along the walls, a clear floor in the middle, and room for one more person at every corner. Sofhu builds these sets to order for Rome addresses and ships them free. There is nothing to visit in the city, so this page explains how to choose well from a distance.

The first choice is between two products. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating in upholstered units with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters, like the teal set at the top of this page. The Arabic floor sofa is low: a seat mattress near the floor, loose back cushions, armrests and an ottoman. Sofhu makes both to measure.

Who sits on an Arabic majlis in Rome

Rome has Bangladeshi, Egyptian and Moroccan communities, and districts such as Esquilino and Tor Pignattara are known for their immigrant families and shops. It also hosts two sets of embassies, those accredited to Italy and those accredited to the Holy See, which brings Arab diplomatic families and reception rooms that need furnishing.

The uses differ. A family wants a room that works every day and stretches for iftar. A mission wants a formal space for visitors. Egyptian households can read about the tradition behind their own Arabic corner on our Egyptian Arabic seating page, and the broader picture is in the Arabic majlis guide.

Tiled floors and what they change

Roman apartments typically have tiled floors, and tile changes two things. It is cool underfoot, which is welcome in August and less so in January, and it is hard, which makes a firm seat feel firmer.

Plan for a rug from the start. A rug inside an L-shape or U-shape marks the sitting area, softens the tile for anyone who sits on a floor cushion, and gives the tea tray a level place. If the floor is polished marble or patterned cement tile that you want to keep visible, a single row with a small rug in front does less to hide it.

Choosing an Arabic floor seating layout by the walls

Start from the walls, not from a catalogue photo. Sofhu’s floor sofas are not freestanding and need a wall or another firm surface behind the backrests.

Mark shutters, radiators and tall windows on your sketch. A run can stop short of a window or be made in a different length on each side. Our guide on how to measure a room for a majlis walks through it, and L-shape and U-shape layouts compares the two corner plans.

Covers for a Roman summer

Hot summers favour breathable covers. Sofhu’s linen floor sofas are described as absorbent and porous, with a refreshing feel in hot weather, and they wash at 30°C. Velvet gives a richer look for a formal reception room and suits evening use. The teal velvet set at the top of this page, photographed on a marble floor, shows that direction.

Whatever the fabric, every cover has a zip and comes off for washing. In a household that hosts often, that matters more than the pattern.

The cream sadu-pattern set below is an Arabic floor sofa, the low alternative to the majlis.

Embassy and reception orders

For a reception room, consistency counts: one fabric, one seat height, corners that meet cleanly. Send the plan and the number of places needed, and Sofhu will build the runs to length. Our article on the office majlis for companies and embassies covers seat height, colour and how to mix floor seating with chairs for guests who prefer them.

How an order reaches Rome

Send your measurements, a photo and your preferred colours through get a quote by measurement or WhatsApp. Once the design is agreed, the set is made in Türkiye, vacuum packed and shipped free to your door. Open the vacuum bags by hand, without a blade, and the cushions regain their shape.

Duties or taxes may apply to goods entering Italy from outside the EU, so ask Sofhu about your order first. See ordering a majlis from Türkiye to the EU for the general process, the Arabic floor sofa page for the range, and Arabic sofas in Italy for the national overview. If the set is for Ramadan, our iftar and Eid seating plan helps you work out how many places you need.

Questions

Before you order

Will a floor-level set slide or mark a tiled floor?

Sofhu states that its floor-level design does not scratch floors. It publishes nothing about grip, so on smooth tiles put a rug under the front edge or in front of the seating, which also adds warmth. The backrests lean on the wall.

Can I order one set for Ramadan and add pieces later?

The sets are modular, so a single row can later become an L-shape. If you already know you will extend, say so in the first enquiry, so that Sofhu can advise whether to make the extra pieces together in the same fabric and keep the whole room matched.

Does Sofhu supply embassies and offices in Rome?

It can. Sofhu lists offices and workplaces among the settings its seating is used in and takes project and wholesale enquiries. Send the room plan, the number of seats needed and any colour requirements, and ask for a project quote. There is no local representative, so everything is arranged remotely.

Is a majlis sofa suitable for older relatives?

A floor-level seat asks more of the knees than a chair. For older guests, consider the raised majlis, which sits at sofa height, or ask Sofhu for thicker seat cushions on a floor sofa, and keep one armrest bolster at each place so there is something firm to push up from.

Do I have to pay anything when the delivery arrives in Rome?

The shipping itself is free. Because the goods come from Türkiye, import duty or tax may apply depending on the destination, and the terms for Italy are not published. Ask Sofhu before ordering what will be declared and whether any charge is collected on arrival.
