An Arabic majlis for a home in Switzerland is made to measure and shipped from Türkiye, since Sofhu, the manufacturer, keeps no shop or stock in the country. Two things should be clear before anything else. First, an Arabic majlis in Switzerland is a made-to-order purchase: Sofhu manufactures the seating in Türkiye and has no shop or stock on Swiss soil. Second, Switzerland sits outside the EU, so what you may have read about ordering furniture into Germany or France does not apply here. With those two points settled, the rest is a design question, and a pleasant one.
What is confirmed about delivery and customs, and what is not
Shipping to Switzerland is free. Sofhu ships worldwide at no charge, and the cushions travel vacuum packed in sealed bags so the parcels stay compact.
Import charges are a separate matter. Switzerland is not in the EU and is not covered by the EU’s customs union with Türkiye. Duties or taxes may apply to your order depending on the destination, and Sofhu has not published how this works for Swiss addresses. Ask Sofhu directly before you order, and check the current rules with Swiss customs. The steps of an overseas order in general are set out in how to order a custom majlis online.
Who orders a majlis in Switzerland
The country’s Muslim population is largely of Balkan origin, Albanian and Bosniak, and of Turkish origin. Geneva is different: its international organisations and diplomatic missions give it a long-standing Arab presence, and it is a familiar summer destination for visitors from the Gulf.
That mix produces two kinds of buyer. Families of Turkish background often know low seating from home as the sedir, the cushioned seat built along the wall, or as the şark köşesi, the corner of floor cushions. Sofhu’s carved-wood Turkish majlis sets belong to that world. Gulf and Levantine households want the Arabic form: a guest room lined with seating, armrest bolsters between the places, a rug in the centre.
A third group has no family tie to either tradition and simply likes the way a low room feels. For them the modern Arabic sofa designs are the usual way in.
Sofhu makes two products for all three. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height, built as upholstered units with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa, like the taupe set below, is a low seat mattress at floor level with loose back cushions, armrest blocks and a matching ottoman.

Design-led rooms: restraint first
Many buyers here start from an interior that is already finished and want the seating to fit into it. A majlis can meet that brief if three decisions are made carefully.
- One fabric family. Choose a single cloth for seats and backs and let any pattern appear only on the cushions or the base band.
- A colour taken from the room. Match the stone, the timber or the curtains. Taupe, grey, cream and charcoal sit easily with oak and concrete.
- Trim with a purpose. A single line of piping or one gold band reads as tailoring. Several compete with each other.
The taupe medallion floor sofa above shows a patterned fabric handled this way, in one tone from rug to backrest. For the opposite approach, a room built around a strong colour, look at the teal majlis in a U-shape below.

Linen is worth considering where the look is plain and matt. Sofhu describes its linen floor sofas as breathable and absorbent. Velvet gives deeper colour and suits a formal room.
Apartments and villas: choosing the layout
The layout follows the home.
| Home | Layout | Note |
|---|---|---|
| City apartment | Single row or L-shape | Keeps the living room usable for everything else |
| Large apartment with a second reception room | U-shape | A dedicated guest room |
| Villa | U-shape or full perimeter, possibly raised | Room for a formal majlis and a family corner |
Both the majlis and the floor sofa are planned against a wall or another solid surface. In open-plan rooms with glass on several sides, plan the seating on the solid walls and tell Sofhu about the glazing when you send the plan.
Floor level or raised
Not everyone wants to sit at floor height, and not every tradition does. A raised Arabic majlis brings the seat to the height of a conventional sofa and is easier for older guests. An Arabic floor sofa keeps everyone low and makes a room feel larger.

The unit above is a single module with a panelled back, a gold cross inlay and scrolled, tasselled armrests, the kind of piece that suits a formal reception room. The trade-offs are compared in floor seating vs raised diwan. Whatever the height, the filling is 32 kg/m³ foam with no springs, and the covers unzip for washing at 30°C.
From measurements to a quote
Everything about the set is open to choice: dimensions, fabric, colour, pattern, cushion firmness. The custom majlis page lists the options. Businesses fitting out a venue should read about wholesale majlis and Arabic sofas.
