The question in Zurich is rarely where to put a majlis. It is whether a majlis sofa belongs in the apartment at all, next to a clean-lined kitchen and a wall of plain shelving. It can, and the result often looks more considered than a standard sectional, because every part of it has been chosen. This page is a short guide to choosing well.

Does a majlis sofa suit a Zurich apartment

Yes, if you think of it as fitted low seating and not as decoration. Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city, with residents of Balkan, Turkish and Arab background and a large international professional population. Some of them grew up with a majlis. Others have only seen one on their travels. Both kinds of buyer usually want the same thing here: the comfort and sociability of low seating, in a form that respects a well-finished interior.

A made-to-measure set has a real advantage over a sofa from a furniture store. It runs the full length of the wall, corner to corner, with no leftover gap. The comparison is worked through in majlis vs sectional sofa.

Before: a second starting layout with a beige sofa, armchair and family photo wall.

A room like the one above, with a sofa, an armchair and a coffee table, is the usual starting point. Replace those three pieces with one continuous run along the wall and the floor opens up.

Choose one module and repeat it

A majlis is built from repeating units. Pick the unit carefully and the room follows. The gallery on this page shows single modules photographed on white, which is the clearest way to compare them.

Ivory Arabic majlis with a taupe damask centre runner, a tasselled bolster armrest and two striped cushions
A quiet neutral scheme: ivory fabric with a taupe damask runner down the centre of the back and seat.

The ivory module above has a taupe damask runner down the centre and no other ornament. It is about as quiet as an Arabic sofa gets. At the other end of the neutral range is charcoal.

Charcoal velvet Arabic majlis module with silver geometric jacquard bands, fringed throws and a tasselled bolster
Charcoal velvet paired with a silver geometric weave, finished with fringed armrest throws and hand-tied tassels.

Charcoal velvet with a silver geometric band holds its own in a room with dark timber or black metal. When you compare modules, look at three things:

  • The backrest. Channelled, tufted or flat. Flat and channelled backs look most contemporary.
  • The armrest. Bolster, wedge or tray-top. Tray-tops double as side tables, which saves floor space.
  • The base band. A patterned band adds interest at floor level. A plain one makes the seat look lighter.

More designs in this spirit are on the modern Arabic sofa page.

Every module shown here is an Arabic majlis in Sofhu’s sense: a raised, upholstered unit with a solid base, a fixed back and arm bolsters. Sofhu also makes the Arabic floor sofa, a lower set of floor-level seat cushions with loose backs and an ottoman, for buyers who want to sit closer to the ground.

Palette: take the colours from the room

High-spec apartments usually have their palette set by the architecture: the floor, the window frames, the kitchen fronts. Borrow from those. Grey, ivory, taupe and black are the easy choices, and beige, cream and grey majlis ideas shows them in full rooms. If you want one strong colour, use it on the seat and keep everything else neutral. The method is explained in how to choose majlis colours.

Fabric matters as much as colour. Velvet deepens a shade and catches the light. Linen and plain weaves stay matt. The series are listed on Sofhu’s fabrics page.

Living with other furniture

Many Zurich apartments have no spare room for guests, so the majlis shares the living room with a dining table, a desk or a media unit. Keep the seating on one or two walls and leave the others to the rest of the furniture.

L-shaped light grey majlis seating set with black armrests, gold crossed straps and three black and gold cushions
Black armrests and cushions give the pale grey L-shaped set its contrast.

The pale grey L-shape above shows the proportion to aim for: seating on two walls, a rug to mark the area and the rest of the floor clear. Practical advice on combining the two styles is in mixing a majlis with Western furniture.

Two facts to plan around. A majlis is planned against a wall, so it should not float in the middle of an open-plan room without something solid behind it. And the covers are removable and washable at 30°C, which makes pale colours more realistic than they first seem.

Ordering to a Zurich address

Sofhu makes the set in Türkiye from your measurements and ships it free. The cushions are filled with 32 kg/m³ foam and arrive vacuum packed. Switzerland is outside the EU, so import duty or tax may apply, and Sofhu has not published the details. Ask before you order. The country page on the Arabic majlis in Switzerland explains what is and is not confirmed.

German speakers can read about the orientalische Sitzecke. Buyers in the west of the country may prefer the page on a majlis sofa in Geneva.

Questions

Before you order

Will a majlis look out of place next to modern furniture?

Not if you treat it as a low sofa and keep the palette tight. Choose a plain or tone-on-tone fabric, repeat one colour from the room, and keep ornaments few. A single row or an L in grey, ivory or charcoal sits comfortably beside a dining table and shelving in a contemporary style.

Can I order only one or two modules instead of a whole room?

Sofhu makes sets to the customer's request, including compact ones for a small seating area. A short single row for a reading corner or a guest room is a normal order. Give the wall length you want to fill and Sofhu will quote for that.

Is there a Sofhu dealer in Zurich?

No. Sofhu sells direct as the manufacturer and has no dealer, display or stock in Zurich or elsewhere in Switzerland. Sets are produced to order in Türkiye and delivered to the customer's address. The planning is done remotely, with photos and, if you wish, a video call.

How firm is the seat?

Sofhu describes its standard cushions as firm. The foam density is 32 kg/m³, but density is not the same as hardness, and Sofhu does not publish a hardness figure. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer foam, so describe what you find comfortable.

Are the designs in the photos fixed, or can I change the colours?

They can be changed. Colour, fabric type, pattern and dimensions are all made to the customer's request, and details such as stitching or embroidery can be adjusted. Use the photographs as a starting point, name the module you like and say what you would alter.
