Bulgaria shares a land border with Türkiye, the country where every Sofhu set is made. For anyone looking for an Arabic majlis in Bulgaria, that means buying directly from a manufacturer in the neighbouring country, with the seating cut to your room and free shipping to your address. Sofhu has no shop in Bulgaria. Each set is produced to order.

Low seating is not foreign here

Bulgaria has one of the largest indigenous Muslim populations in the European Union. Bulgarian Turks live mainly in the Kardzhali region and across the northeast, including Razgrad. Pomak communities are found chiefly in the Rhodope Mountains, and many Roma are Muslim too. In these communities, and well beyond them, low cushioned seating along the wall is part of a shared Ottoman domestic heritage. Minder is a familiar word here, not an imported one.

That changes what a page like this needs to say. Nobody in Kardzhali needs to be told how to sit in a guest room. The useful questions are narrower: who makes the seating, what is inside it, and whether it will fit the room.

The Turkish sedir page describes the built-in raised seat of the traditional Turkish house and its modern descendant, the floor-level corner set. Turkish speakers can also read şark köşesi in Turkish. Sofhu’s seating continues that line in three forms. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set directly on the floor. The Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height and built as upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters, like the beige set at the top of this page. The third is cushions on a wooden bench frame, and the existing page on the Turkish majlis by Sofhu shows the carved-frame version. The burgundy set below is a floor sofa in an L shape.

Arab and Syrian households in Sofia

Sofia has Arab and Syrian communities and businesses, and their starting point is a little different. A Syrian family is more likely to ask for low seating with a seat mattress, back cushions and armrests between sitters, which is the pattern covered under Syrian and Levantine Arabic seating. A Gulf-style majlis, raised and fully upholstered, with deeper colours and gold trim, is described on the main Arabic majlis page. Both are cut to the room. They differ in height and in how they are built.

Matching the layout to Bulgarian homes

Homes in Bulgaria range from apartments in the cities to family houses in towns and villages, and the right layout depends on which you have.

HomeLayout to considerReason
City apartment living roomSingle row or L-shapeLeaves space for a table and the balcony door
Dedicated guest room in a family houseU-shapeSeats the most people, centre stays free for serving
Room shared with a dining tableL-shape in one cornerSeating and table do not compete

Whatever the shape, neither product is freestanding. A floor sofa’s back cushions lean on the wall, and a majlis is built to stand against it. Measure each wall at floor level and note the stove, the radiators and any door that opens inward. The page on L-shape and U-shape majlis layouts shows how corners are handled.

What is inside the cushions

Sofhu fills its seating with 32 kg/m³ polyurethane foam. In the Turkish trade this is written 32 DNS, and it means one cubic metre of the foam weighs about 32 kg. Density is the amount of material in the cushion. It is not the same as hardness: a light foam can be made to feel hard, and it will usually lose its height sooner. Denser foam generally keeps its shape and support longer.

The cushions contain no springs. If you like a softer or firmer seat, ask for it when you order. For the detail behind these numbers, see foam density for floor seating.

Fabric for cold winters and hot summers

Most of Bulgaria has cold winters and hot summers, so one fabric rarely suits every room.

  • Velvet and chenille feel warm and suit a guest room used mainly from autumn to spring.
  • Linen is breathable and is the cooler choice for a sunny room or a house on the Black Sea coast.
  • Woven kilim patterns hide wear and sit naturally beside traditional rugs.

All covers have zips and come off. Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C.

Arabic sofa set delivery to Bulgaria

Sets are vacuum packed to reduce their volume and sent to your door by cargo carrier. Shipping is free. When the packs arrive, open them without a blade and let the foam expand.

Sofhu does not publish a fixed production or transit time, so ask for current timing with your quote, especially before Ramadan or a wedding. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination. The article on ordering a majlis from Türkiye to the EU sets out what official sources say.

Cafes, restaurants and guest houses

Floor seating is also a commercial product. Sofhu’s seating is used in cafes, shisha lounges, restaurants and hotels, and it takes wholesale orders from small and large businesses. The existing page on the Arabic majlis for cafes shows how these spaces are fitted.

How to get a quote

Send the wall lengths, a few photos, the layout you want and a fabric or colour you like. Then get a quote by measurement or write on WhatsApp. If you are still comparing options, the Arabic majlis and Arabic floor sofa overviews are the place to start.

Questions

Before you order

Is a Sofhu set the same as the low corner sets sold in Türkiye?

It belongs to the same family. The corner set sold in Türkiye as şark köşesi is firm foam cushions on the floor or on a low base, usually in kilim-pattern fabric. Sofhu makes that kind of seating to measure as its Arabic floor sofa, with armrests, an ottoman, floor cushions and a matching rug, and also makes the raised, fully upholstered Arabic majlis.

Can I collect my order myself from Türkiye, since the border is close?

Sofhu's standard arrangement is delivery to your door with free shipping, and that is what the quote will assume. If you have a particular reason to arrange things differently, raise it when you ask for the quote. Sofhu does not publish a collection address, so do not travel on the assumption that one exists.

Will a floor set work on a tiled floor in a village house?

Yes. The seat cushions rest directly on the floor and do not scratch it, whether that is tile, wood or laminate. A rug in the middle makes a tiled room warmer underfoot in winter. The requirement that does not change is a solid wall behind every run of seating, because the backrests lean on it.

Which Sofhu fabrics look closest to traditional kilim seating?

Sofhu has a woven series it calls Kilim, and several of its floor sofas use kilim-pattern upholstery in red, black, taupe or grey with a matching rug. If you want the seating to sit comfortably beside handwoven rugs you already own, send a photo of them with your enquiry so the colours can be matched.

Does Sofhu supply cafes and restaurants in Bulgaria?

It can. Sofhu takes wholesale and project orders from small and large businesses, and its seating is used in cafes, shisha lounges, restaurants and hotels. A commercial order starts the same way as a home order, with a measured plan of the space, and Sofhu prepares a quote for the whole project.

Are there customs charges between Türkiye and Bulgaria?

Shipping is free. Bulgaria is in the European Union and Türkiye is not, so a parcel crosses a customs border, and duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination. Sofhu has not published how this is handled for Bulgaria. Ask before ordering, and read our guide to ordering from Türkiye to the EU.
