Lackawanna does not need the majlis explained. Yemeni men came to this city to work at the Bethlehem Steel plant in the early and middle decades of the twentieth century, and their families are still here, concentrated in the First Ward. It is one of the oldest Yemeni communities in the United States. This page is about how to get a majlis sofa made properly for a house here.

What a Lackawanna family expects from a diwan

In the tower houses of Sana’a, the mafraj is the room at the top with the wide windows, where family and friends gather in the afternoon and early evening. The diwan is the larger sitting room. A Lackawanna house puts that room on whichever floor has the space, but the idea of it does not change.

The expectations carry over. Seating should run around the walls so that nobody sits with their back to anyone. It should be firm enough for a long sitting. Each place should have something to lean an elbow on. And the room should look finished: seating, rug and curtains chosen together. Sofhu’s page on the Yemeni diwan and mafraj covers the tradition, and its live Yemeni majlis page shows the range.

What Sofhu’s Yemeni-style sets contain

Sofhu’s Yemeni-style seating is sold as a full-room set, in two forms. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating built as upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters, usually in velvet with gold accents, like the beige set at the top of this page. The Arabic floor sofa is a low cushion set: seat mattresses on the floor, loose back cushions and armrest blocks. With either, you choose how much of the room you want.

  • Seat cushions for the perimeter of the room
  • Backrests and loose pillows
  • Armrests between places
  • A rug or kilim for the centre
  • Curtains
  • An ottoman
  • Wall decor

Seating only: the cream U-shape without rug or ottoman, showing how much open floor it leaves.

The U-shaped floor sofa above shows the idea in a cream fabric with burgundy bands: three walls of seating with armrests at the corners and the ends. Sofhu describes its Yemeni majlis fabrics as typically velvet with gold, silver or bronze accents, in geometric and floral patterns. Colour, pattern and embroidery can all be changed to order. Parts of a majlis set names every piece, and majlis sofa sets compares complete sets.

The star design, plainly described

The star-patterned floor sofa, like the navy one below, is a strong look, and Sofhu has long listed it with its Yemeni-style sets. It is a low cushion set, not a raised majlis. The star is a Sofhu design; no claim is made here about its history in Yemen. If you have a family fabric in mind, a photograph is the best brief. The guide to majlis patterns and motifs shows the alternatives.

Foam and fabric for lake-effect winters

Lackawanna sits on the Lake Erie shore, and lake-effect winters are part of life. Winter keeps the family indoors and the majlis in daily use, so two choices matter.

First, the filling. Sofhu uses 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs inside. Density is weight per cubic metre, and foam with more material in it generally keeps its height and support longer than light foam. On a custom order you can ask for a firmer or softer seat, and cushion thickness is yours to choose.

Second, the cover. Velvet and chenille are warm under the hand and suit a room used most in the cold months. All covers have zippers and can be taken off, and Sofhu states they wash in the machine at 30°C.

From measurements to your door

There is no Sofhu shop in Lackawanna and no local stockist. Sofhu manufactures to order and ships to your home, free of shipping charges. The cushions arrive vacuum packed in sealed bags; open them by hand and the foam fills out.

To begin, measure each wall at floor level, note doors, radiators and low windows, and take photos. Then send the measurements for a quote or message on WhatsApp. If the room is being planned for Ramadan, the iftar and Eid seating plan is useful reading. Customs duty or tax may apply on entry to the United States, so ask about it with your quote.

Questions

Before you order

Can Sofhu copy the diwan in my family's house in Yemen?

Send photos. Sofhu customises colour, fabric, pattern, stitching and embroidery to order, and can discuss the design with you on a video call. An exact match to an old fabric cannot be promised from a picture, but the layout, colour scheme and the proportions of seat, back and armrest can be planned around it.

Is the star pattern a traditional Yemeni fabric?

The star design is a Sofhu pattern, made as a low floor sofa and long listed alongside its Yemeni-style sets. The company does not present it as a historical Yemeni textile. Medallion, striped and plain velvet fabrics are available if you prefer a different look.

We host large gatherings. Can the seating run around the whole room?

Yes. Wall-to-wall seating is what the full-room sets are made for. Measure every wall, mark the door and any heating unit, and Sofhu will fit seats, backrests and armrests to the remaining length. Tell them how many people you usually receive so the armrests are spaced sensibly.

Do I have to take the curtains and rug as well?

No. You can order the seating alone and keep the rug and curtains you already own. If you want everything to match, Sofhu makes rug, curtains, ottoman and wall pieces as part of a set. Say which you want when you ask for the quote.

Where can I buy a Yemeni majlis near Lackawanna?

Sofhu does not sell through any shop in Lackawanna or Buffalo. It is the manufacturer and works to order, delivering to your home. The whole process, from measurements to design approval, is handled by message, phone or video call.

Will I owe tax or duty when the set arrives?

Delivery is free of shipping charges. Whether United States import duty or tax applies depends on customs rules for the shipment, and Sofhu does not publish a policy on it. Ask directly when you request your quote so there are no surprises.
