For a Buffalo home, a majlis sofa is best planned as a U-shape or L-shape around the front living room, in a warm fabric such as velvet or chenille with a rug underneath. Sofhu makes each set to your wall measurements in Türkiye, fills it with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and ships it free. Ask for a quote by measurement.

The front room of a Buffalo double suits a majlis sofa unusually well. It is large, it is square enough to seat people on three sides, and for several months of the year it is where everyone wants to be. Sofhu builds Arabic seating for rooms like this, cut to your walls in Türkiye and shipped free to Buffalo.
It comes in two forms. An Arabic floor sofa is the low one: a seat mattress at floor level, loose back cushions, armrest blocks and usually a matching ottoman, like the emerald set at the top of this page. An Arabic majlis is raised to sofa height, with an upholstered base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters, like the single velvet units in the gallery. Most of this page is about the floor-level kind.
Who sits on a majlis in Buffalo
Buffalo’s floor-seating households come from several directions. The city has a growing Yemeni community, tied to the long-settled Yemeni steelworker families of neighbouring Lackawanna. Somali, Iraqi, Burmese and Bangladeshi families live here too, many of them on the West Side and East Side, where refugees have been resettled.
Arabic-style seating around the walls is familiar to many of these households, and for Yemeni families it is the expected form of a guest room. Sofhu’s pages on the Yemeni diwan and mafraj and on Somali Arabic seating describe each in more detail, and there is a separate page for Lackawanna.
A U-shape for the front room of a double
The typical Buffalo house is the wood-frame double: two flats, one above the other, each with a big living room at the front. That room usually gives you two long walls and a shorter third wall under the front windows, which is the natural footprint of a U-shape.

- U-shape if the room is used mainly for sitting and hosting. Three sides face each other and the centre stays open for a cloth or a low table.
- L-shape if the room also has to hold a television wall or a passage to the dining room.
- Single row for a bedroom or the smaller back room.
On a floor sofa the back cushions lean against the wall, so they need something solid behind them. Windows with low sills are fine; an open archway is not. The L-shape and U-shape majlis page compares the two layouts in detail.
Building the set for snow season
Long, snowy winters change three choices: fabric, cushion thickness and what goes on the floor.
| Choice | Sensible pick for Buffalo | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric | Velvet or chenille | A soft pile feels warm to sit on in a cold month |
| Cushion | A thicker option | More foam between you and the floor |
| Floor | A rug inside the seating | Covers bare boards where feet and children rest |
Sofhu offers its cushions in different thicknesses, and describes its suede series as a good option for autumn and winter. Its velvet floor sofas are the usual choice for a formal room, and velvet vs linen vs jacquard weighs the alternatives. A matching rug can be made with the set, as in the navy example below. If you plan to use your own, see what size rug goes with a majlis.

What is inside the cushions
Sofhu uses 32 kg/m³ high-density polyurethane foam, with no springs or metal. The figure is a density: a cubic metre of the foam weighs about 32 kg. It tells you how much material you are buying, and denser foam generally holds its shape better over years of sitting than light foam does. Firmness is a separate choice, and Sofhu will make the seat softer or harder if you ask.
The covers close with zippers and come off for washing at 30°C. Sofhu also sells full Yemeni-style room sets in which the rug, curtains and ottoman are made to go with the seating.
Delivery to Western New York
Sofhu has no shop in Buffalo, and nothing is held nearby. The set is made to order and sent to your door, packed under vacuum in sealed bags. Keep blades away from the packaging, open the bags by hand and give the foam time to expand.
Shipping costs nothing. Customs duty or tax may be due on arrival in the United States, depending on the shipment, so ask Sofhu how that is dealt with before you place the order.
