In a Bay Ridge attached house, the room that matters most to guests is often downstairs. A finished basement, or the front room on the parlour floor, is set up as the family diwan: seating around the walls, a carpet in the middle, and room for uncles, cousins and neighbours on a Friday night. Sofhu builds an Arabic majlis for that room in Türkiye, to your measurements, and ships it free to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. It makes two products for it: the raised, upholstered Arabic majlis shown at the top of this page, and the low Arabic floor sofa of loose cushions that many Yemeni-style rooms use.

Where the diwan goes in a Bay Ridge home

The house type decides the room. Homes here are a mix of pre-war apartments and attached one- and two-family houses.

  • Basement. Usually the largest clear space. A U-shape on three walls turns it into a full diwan.
  • Front room. An L-shape that leaves the bay or front windows open works well.
  • Pre-war apartment. An L-shape or single row in the living room, planned around radiators and the foyer opening.

The navy majlis above, an L-shape in silver medallion fabric beside a white rug, is a typical corner arrangement. The set at the top of the page is the same majlis as a U-shape around three walls. For basements in particular, read basement majlis ideas.

An Arabic majlis for Bay Ridge, Brooklyn families

Bay Ridge has one of New York’s largest Arab-American populations. Its main shopping streets are known for Middle Eastern restaurants, bakeries and shops. Many of the families here come from places where receiving guests on low seating is simply how a home is arranged.

Each tradition has its own shape. In Sana’a the social room is the mafraj at the top of the house, and the diwan is the larger sitting room. In Palestine and Jordan the guest hall is the madafa. You can read about both on the Yemeni diwan and mafraj and Jordanian and Palestinian madafa pages, or see them side by side in Yemeni vs Saudi vs Moroccan majlis.

Yemeni-style sets and the full room

A Yemeni majlis, the room, is ordered whole and not as a single sofa. Sofhu’s Yemeni-style floor sofa sets can include seat cushions, back pillows, armrests, a carpet or kilim, curtains, an ottoman and wall pieces, all in one fabric story. It describes the usual fabrics as velvets with gold, silver or bronze accents, in geometric and floral patterns.

Red with small sadu-style woven motifs, as on the floor sofa above, is the bolder choice. Navy with cream stars is calmer, and there are more ideas in blue majlis ideas. Sofhu’s pages on Yemeni majlises for the USA and the Yemeni majlis show further models.

Measuring older Brooklyn rooms

Old houses are rarely square, so measure every wall separately.

  1. Measure each wall at floor level, baseboard to baseboard.
  2. Note radiators, steam pipes, boiler doors and closet doors.
  3. Mark where the stairs land in a basement.
  4. Photograph each wall.

Seating runs along the walls, and a floor sofa’s back cushions lean on them, so only solid wall counts. The full method is in how to measure a room for a majlis.

Foam and covers for a room in constant use

A family diwan is sat on daily and slept on when relatives stay. Sofhu fills its cushions with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam and no springs. Density is the weight of foam per cubic metre, and denser foam generally holds its shape longer. Firmness is chosen separately, softer or harder.

All covers are zippered and removable, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C.

Questions

Before you order

Is a basement a good place for a majlis?

It is often the best room in an attached house: three plain walls, few windows and space away from the kitchen. Check first that the floor is dry and the walls are finished, and measure around the boiler door, meters and stairs. A rug under the centre makes the room warmer.

Is the star pattern a traditional Yemeni fabric?

The eight-point star fabric on the floor sofas in the gallery is a Sofhu design that many customers choose for a Yemeni-style room. It is presented as a Sofhu pattern, with no claim about its historical origin. If your family knows a pattern by a particular name, send a photo and Sofhu will look at matching it.

Can the armrests be made taller for long sittings?

Cushions and armrests are among the parts Sofhu lists as customisable, along with dimensions. Describe how you sit, for example leaning on one elbow for hours, and ask for armrests to suit. The details are confirmed in your quote.

We live in a pre-war walk-up. Can a full set get up the stairs?

A floor sofa is made of separate cushions, and Sofhu vacuum packs them in sealed bags for shipping, so there is no rigid frame the length of the wall. A raised majlis is modular as well. Tell Sofhu which floor you are on when you request the quote.

Can I order curtains and a rug to match?

Yes. Sofhu describes its Yemeni-style sets as including seat cushions, pillows, armrests, a carpet or kilim, curtains, an ottoman and wall decor. You can take the seating alone or add the pieces you want. Give window sizes if you would like curtains.

Is there a majlis furniture store on 5th Avenue that carries Sofhu?

No. Sofhu does not sell through stores in Brooklyn and keeps no stock there. It is the manufacturer, and each set is made to order in Türkiye and shipped free to your home. Choose from photos and settle the design by message or video call.
