Anyone in St. Louis who grew up with a sećija already knows what a majlis is for. The Bosnian low sofa along the wall and the Arabic majlis come from the same Ottoman-era way of furnishing a room: seating at the edges, the centre left open, guests facing one another. Sofhu makes this kind of seating in Türkiye, to measure, and ships a majlis sofa to St. Louis free of charge.

A city that already knows low seating

St. Louis has the largest Bosnian community in the United States. It grew up around the Bevo Mill neighbourhood, often called Little Bosnia, and has since spread into south St. Louis County. Afghan families have been resettled in the city more recently. Both groups bring a home tradition that a standard American sofa does not match.

That is who this page is written for, together with Arab families in the area and anyone who simply prefers to sit low. The wider state is covered on the Missouri page.

From sećija to majlis sofa: St. Louis options

The choice is between sitting at sofa height, on the floor or on a bench. Sofhu makes all three.

TypeWhat it isSuits
Arabic majlisRaised, fully upholstered units with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters, as shown on this pageA guest room, older relatives
Arabic floor sofaSeat mattress, loose back cushions and armrest blocks placed on the floorA relaxed family room, children, large gatherings
Wooden bench-frame setA wooden base with fitted cushions on topA formal front room, older guests

The bench form is the closer cousin of the sećija and of the Turkish sedir, the raised seat built along the wall of a traditional house. Read more on the Turkish sedir page, see Sofhu’s wooden bench sets, or compare low and raised seating in floor seating vs raised diwan.

Brick bungalows and two-family flats

Plan around a long, narrow room. Brick bungalows and two-family flats are typical St. Louis housing, and their living rooms usually have one good long wall, a front window and an opening to the next room.

  • Bungalow living room. A single row on the long wall, or an L-shape if the corner beside it is clear.
  • Two-family flat. An L-shape that keeps the path to the next room open.
  • Finished basement. A full U-shape for holidays and big family meals.

The seating has to lean on something solid. It is not freestanding, so measure wall, not floor area.

Afghan families and the toshak

A toshak is the same idea made thinner and softer, and Sofhu produces it too. The Afghan floor mattress serves as seat and bed, with loose back pillows in place of a fixed backrest. If that is the room you remember, start with what a toshak is, the Afghan toshak style page or Sofhu’s premium Afghan toshak.

Foam, covers and colour

The filling is 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs. Denser foam generally holds its height longer, and it is a separate matter from firmness, which you can ask to have softer or harder.

Covers zip off, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. For colour, the light blue L-shape and the grey U-shape shown on this page sit quietly against painted plaster and oak floors. Teal, as in the photograph at the top, or black with cream stripes makes a stronger statement. The guide to choosing majlis colours helps narrow it down.

Ordering from St. Louis

Send three things through the quote form or WhatsApp: the length of each wall, photos of the room and the look you want. Sofhu replies with a layout and a quote, and details can be settled on a video call.

Shipping is free. The cushions arrive vacuum packed, and you open the bags by hand so the foam can expand. Duties or taxes may apply to imports under United States rules, so ask how that works before you confirm. For more models, browse Arabic sofa sets and the oriental sofa guide.

Questions

Before you order

Is a majlis the same as a Bosnian sećija?

They are relatives. Both are low seats that run along the wall and come from the same Ottoman-era habit of sitting close to the floor. Sofhu's Arabic majlis is a raised, upholstered unit with a fixed back and arm bolsters, and its floor sofa is a lower set of loose cushions. If you want something nearer a bench, ask about Sofhu's wooden-frame sets with cushions on top.

Can the seating run along the long wall of a narrow bungalow living room?

Yes. A single row on the long wall is often the best use of a narrow room, and it can be extended with a short return at one end if a corner is free. Sofhu cuts each run to the wall length you supply.

We live in the upstairs flat of a two-family. Will it come up the stairs?

The cushions travel vacuum packed in sealed bags and a set is made of separate modular pieces, which is far easier on a staircase than a one-piece sofa. Mention the stairs and any tight turn when you ask for your quote so it can be considered in the plan.

Can Sofhu make an Afghan toshak set?

Yes. Sofhu lists Afghan toshak among its lines, with zippered covers that can be machine washed in cold water turned inside out. Say that you want a toshak-style set when you send your measurements, and describe how you plan to use the room.

Can I get a seat that is softer than a firm majlis cushion?

On custom orders you can ask for a softer or firmer foam, and cushion thickness can be chosen as well. Sofhu's standard feel is on the firm side. Tell Sofhu who will use the seating most, and whether it will also be used for lying down.

Does Sofhu have a store in Bevo Mill or South County?

No. Sofhu has no store, warehouse or stock in the St. Louis area. It is a manufacturer that builds each set to order in Türkiye and delivers it to your home with free shipping. Everything before that is handled by message, photos and video call.
