An Arabic majlis in Latvia is a mail-order purchase, and it is better to say so at the start. Nobody stocks this furniture locally. What you can do is order a set from the people who make it: Sofhu builds majlis seating in Türkiye, cuts it to the room you measure, and ships it free to Latvia. This page explains what arrives, how to choose for a northern climate, and what to prepare before you ask for a price.
What an Arabic majlis is, in furniture terms
A majlis is a sitting room arranged around the walls, and by extension the seating that furnishes it. Sofhu makes that seating as two separate products:
- The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating built as fully upholstered units: a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters that divide the run into places.
- The Arabic floor sofa is the low one: seat cushions that lie on the floor, loose back cushions that lean against the wall, armrest blocks, and usually an ottoman used as a low table and loose floor cushions.
There is no frame, no springs and no assembly in a floor sofa. The pieces are foam-filled, and each one has a zippered cover. People in the Gulf call the raised set a jalsa; the low one is often simply called an Arabic sofa. Our Arabic majlis guide covers the raised range, and the Arabic floor sofa page shows the floor-level sets.
Who orders majlis seating in Latvia
Latvia’s Muslim and Arab communities are small, so demand here is a niche. A set suits three kinds of buyer here: families who grew up with this way of sitting and want it at home, people furnishing a lounge, a reading room or a guest room who like low seating for its own sake, and cafes or studios that want one distinctive corner.
None of these buyers needs a large set. A single row along one wall is a complete piece of furniture, and it can be extended into a corner later because the sets are modular.

Fabric and foam for a cold Baltic climate
Latvia’s climate is cold for much of the year, and that points to warmer, denser fabrics. Velvet and chenille are the natural choices: Sofhu describes its velvet floor sofas as durable and easy to clean, and its chenille as a low-shedding weave. Its suede series is presented as a good option for autumn and winter. Linen is cooler to the touch and is better kept for a sunny summer room.
Two practical points for a cold country:
- Put a rug under or in front of the set. A floor sofa sits close to the floor, and a rug keeps the cold away from feet and from anyone on a floor cushion.
- Ask about seat thickness. Sofhu offers cushions in different thicknesses. A thicker seat lifts you further from the floor and is easier to get up from.
The filling is 32 kg/m³ (32 DNS) polyurethane foam, which means a cubic metre of it weighs about 32 kg. Density tells you how much material is in the cushion, and denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer. It is not a measure of hardness, and you can ask for a softer or firmer feel. Our comparison of velvet, linen and jacquard goes further into fabric, and is floor seating comfortable answers the question most first-time buyers have.
Fitting floor seating into your room
The rule that decides the layout is simple: the seating needs a wall behind it. A majlis is built to line the walls and Sofhu’s floor sofas are not freestanding, so plan along walls and into corners.
| Space | Suggested layout |
|---|---|
| Living room shared with a sofa or dining table | Single row on one wall |
| Corner of a living room, or a small spare room | L-shape |
| A room used only for guests | U-shape on three walls |
Mark radiators on your sketch. A backrest pushed against a radiator blocks its heat, so either stop the run before it or tell Sofhu, and the run can be made shorter on that wall. Windows that reach low to the floor matter in the same way.

Colours that sit well in a northern interior
Traditional majlis colours are strong: burgundy, navy, emerald, black and gold. The navy majlis at the top of this page is a good example, with silver medallions on the upholstery and a white rug in the centre. In a pale, wood-floored room one saturated colour of this kind can carry the whole space.
If you want something quieter, Sofhu also works in cream, beige, grey and taupe, with a small woven band as the only pattern. See beige, cream and grey majlis ideas for rooms built that way. The fabric series are listed on the fabrics page.
Delivery to Latvia
Sofhu ships free worldwide, and that includes Latvia. Sets are vacuum packed for transport, which reduces their volume. When the parcels arrive, open the sealed bags by hand, without a knife or scissors, and the foam expands back to its shape.
Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination. Sofhu has not published terms for Latvia, so ask about your order before you confirm it. The general process is described in ordering a majlis from Türkiye to the EU.
What to send for a quote
Sofhu prices each set from the room, so the quote is only as good as the information you send. Prepare:
- the length of each wall the seating will run along, measured at floor level
- the position of doors, radiators and low windows
- a photo of the room in daylight
- the layout you prefer, and two or three colours you like
Send these through get a quote by measurement or by WhatsApp. The step-by-step version is in how to order a custom majlis online, and custom majlis lists everything that can be changed, from stitching details to cushion thickness.
