Many Algerian families keep a salon arabe, also called the salon oriental, alongside or instead of a European-style salon: seating along the walls, cushions behind the back, a table in the middle, and enough room for the whole family and its guests. An Arabic majlis for Algeria from Sofhu is made for that room. It is built in Türkiye to the wall measurements you send, and shipping is free. One thing has to be settled first, and it is covered below: whether a set can currently be delivered to your address.

The salon arabe and where a Sofhu set fits

The Algerian salon arabe is usually described as a close relative of the Moroccan salon, with the seat on a banquette rather than on the floor. Written sources on Algerian seating are thin, and homes differ by region and family. If that is the room you grew up with, the page on the Algerian salon oriental and the one on the Moroccan sedari describe the tradition in more detail.

What Sofhu makes is the Gulf and Levant cousin of that room, in two forms. The Arabic majlis is raised, sofa-height seating built as fully upholstered units, with a solid base, tall fixed backs and arm bolsters between sitters, made to line the walls. The Arabic floor sofa is the low one: a seat mattress on the floor with loose back cushions and armrest blocks. People searching for a majlis in Algeria, or for مجلس عربي الجزائر, usually want the first as the main guest room, and sometimes the second as a softer corner next to the classic salon.

Majlis or floor sofa

This is the first decision, because it changes how the room is used.

On a floor sofa the cushion thickness can be chosen, and Sofhu also makes wooden bench-frame sets with cushions for people who want a true bench. There is no published standard height, so describe what you want in your own terms: the height of the banquette you sit on now is the most useful number you can send. The comparison of floor seating and a raised diwan goes through comfort and space for each.

Layouts for Algerian rooms

A separate guest salon with three free walls takes a U-shape, which is the layout nearest to the continuous run of a traditional salon. An apartment living room that also holds a dining table usually takes an L-shape in the corner furthest from the door. A single row under a window works as a reading or tea corner beside European furniture.

The L-shaped emerald green medallion seating alone, without rug or ottoman, shows how the corner fits in a cream room with arched niches and a brass lantern.

Sets are modular, so an L can later be split into two rows. Because every piece is cut to your walls, awkward lengths are not a problem; a ready-made set is where the gaps appear. The custom majlis page explains what can be changed, and the Arabic majlis page shows the full range.

Fabric for the coast, the plateaus and the south

Algeria has more than one climate. The northern coast is Mediterranean, with humid summers. The high plateaus are drier and colder in winter. The Sahara is hot and very dry. Fabric should follow where the room is.

  • On the coast, choose a breathable cover. Sofhu describes its linen floor sofas as moisture-absorbing and cool in hot weather. Covers that come off and wash matter more here than anywhere.
  • Inland and in the highlands, velvet and chenille give warmth in winter. Sofhu describes its velvet as durable and easy to clean, and its chenille as shedding very little.
  • In the south, dust is the enemy. A tightly woven fabric in a mid tone hides it better than a pale plain cloth.

All covers have zips, and Sofhu states they can be machine washed at 30°C. The fabric series are listed on the fabrics page.

What is inside the cushions

The seats are filled with 32 DNS polyurethane foam, which means the foam weighs 32 kg per cubic metre. There are no springs. Density tells you how much material is in the cushion, not how hard it feels; denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer than light foam. On a custom order you can ask for a softer or firmer feel.

Arabic sofa set delivery to Algeria: confirm first

Sofhu ships free worldwide and packs its sets vacuum-sealed, so the cushions travel compressed and recover their shape once the bags are opened. That is the general position. For Algeria there is a specific caution: Sofhu has not published how deliveries to Algerian addresses are handled, and this page cannot promise what import rules apply on the day you order. Duties or taxes may also apply depending on the destination.

So ask the question before anything else. Tell Sofhu the city, the size of the set and whether it is for a home or a business, and get the answer in writing. If you are ordering from abroad for a family home in Algeria, say so at the start.

What to send for a quote

  1. The length of each wall at floor level, with doors, windows and radiators marked. The guide on how to measure a room for a majlis shows the method.
  2. A photo of the room taken from the doorway.
  3. Majlis or floor sofa, and the height of your present seating if you have any.
  4. Colours you like, and whether curtains and a rug should match.

Send these through the quote form or WhatsApp. French speakers can read the same process on salon oriental sur mesure, and Arabic readers on مجلس عربي بالمقاس.

Questions

Before you order

Can Sofhu deliver a majlis to Algeria at the moment?

Ask before you plan anything. Sofhu ships free worldwide, but how a set reaches an Algerian address, and what import rules apply to it, has to be checked for your order when you enquire. Send your city and what you want through the quote form or WhatsApp and get a clear answer first.

Is a Sofhu set the same as a Moroccan sedari?

No. A sedari is a wooden banquette frame carrying a mattress at bench height. A Sofhu majlis is also raised, but it is a fully upholstered unit with a solid base and a fixed back. The Arabic floor sofa is the low one: a foam seat on the floor with loose back cushions. Sofhu also makes wooden bench-frame sets, so say which you want.

Can I order only the seat cushions and covers for banquettes I already own?

Sofhu builds to the measurements you provide, so it is reasonable to ask. Send the length and depth of each banquette, a photo, and the thickness you have now. Whether a part order is possible, and on what terms, is something only the quote can answer.

Will I pay customs duty or tax on a majlis sent to Algeria?

Shipping itself is free. Duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination, and this page does not state the rules for Algeria. Ask Sofhu before you order, and check with Algerian customs if you need certainty.

I live in France and want a set for the family house in Algeria. How should I order?

Measure the room in Algeria, not from memory. Ask a relative to measure each wall at floor level and photograph the room from the door. Then tell Sofhu the delivery country at the start, because the answer on delivery is different for a French address and an Algerian one.

Can curtains and a rug be made to match the seating?

Yes. Sofhu makes curtains, rugs, ottomans and floor cushions as complements to its sets, so the room can arrive as one design. Give the window width and drop with your wall measurements, and say whether the rug should sit inside the seating or run under it.
