The single unit above is forest green velvet with cream stripes, a fringed throw over one armrest and a bolster on the other. Velvet like this belongs in a closed, cooled guest room.
The home majlis
For Fujairah’s Emirati families, the majlis is a normal part of the house. The dusty blue majlis at the top of this page is an L along two walls, with ivory trellis trim and tasselled armrests. It suits a guest room where the third wall holds the door.
A plainer setting is the grey-walled living room above: a red sadu-weave floor sofa in an L on a bare wooden floor, no rug, a tall plant in the corner. Leaving the floor bare is a sensible choice near the sea, because a rug is one more thing to air.
For the room itself, the rules do not change by emirate:

- Measure each wall at floor level and mark doors and windows.
- A corner piece joins two runs in an L or U.
