Which fabric survives Houston? That is the first thing to settle when you order a majlis sofa in Houston, ahead of colour and even ahead of layout. The air here is hot and heavy for much of the year, and upholstery that suits a dry climate can feel sticky on the Gulf Coast. Sofhu makes both the raised Arabic majlis and the low Arabic floor sofa to your measurements in Türkiye and ships them free, so the fabric can be chosen for this city and not for a catalogue. The majlis is sofa-height seating in upholstered units with fixed backs and arm bolsters. The floor sofa is a seat mattress near the floor with loose back cushions.
Humidity picks the fabric
Inside an air-conditioned house the room is dry enough for almost any cover. The difference shows on the patio, in a garage room, or in a house where the doors stand open in the evening.
| Where the set will sit | Fabrics to ask about | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Air-conditioned living room | Linen, flat weaves, velvet | All work; pick by feel and cleaning |
| Sunroom or garage conversion | Linen, flat weaves | Breathe better when the room warms up |
| Covered patio | Outdoor water-resistant range | Made for moisture and light rain |
Sofhu describes its linen floor sofas as breathable and absorbent, with a porous structure that feels fresh in hot weather. Its velvets are described as durable and easy to clean, which matters more than warmth in a cooled room. Heavy velvet does not belong outdoors here. The guide to velvet, linen and jacquard compares them in detail.
Arabic majlis Houston homes are built around
Houston is home to one of the largest Arab and Muslim populations in Texas. Middle Eastern and South Asian shops and restaurants are concentrated along Hillcroft Avenue, in the Mahatma Gandhi District, and across the southwest side. Palestinian Americans count Houston among their larger communities.
Many houses are large, single-family and air-conditioned, with a formal living room that sees little use. Some families turn that room into the majlis. With three free walls it takes a U-shape; with a wide window or an opening to the dining room it takes an L. The seating is not freestanding, so plan every run against a wall. For the hosting tradition many Houston Palestinians grew up with, see the page on the Jordanian and Palestinian madafa.
The beige set below is a floor sofa in a U under a curtained window. The black and gold set at the top of this page is a raised majlis.
Patio seating on the Gulf Coast
Evenings outdoors are part of life here once the heat drops, and a low seating corner on a covered patio is a pleasant place for tea. Use fabric made for it. Sofhu’s outdoor sofas, benches and mats are described as water-resistant, with spills that wipe away and tolerance for light rain and moisture. That is not the same as being left out through a storm. Keep outdoor cushions under a roof and bring them in when the weather turns.
Sofhu also makes a foldable, portable outdoor mat, shown below, that goes from the patio to a park lawn and back into a cupboard. The outdoor majlis hub and the balcony and patio ideas cover the options.
Foam that keeps its shape
The seats are filled with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, called 32 DNS in Türkiye. The number is weight per cubic metre. It tells you how much material is in the cushion, and denser foam generally holds its height and support longer than light foam. The cushions contain no springs. Ask for a softer or firmer feel when you order; both are possible. The Arabic floor sofa hub explains how the pieces go together.
How an order reaches Houston
Sofhu is not a local shop, so the order runs on your measurements. Send the length of each wall, the positions of doors, windows and air vents, and two photos of the room through the quote by measurement page or on WhatsApp. Say whether the set is for indoors or a patio.
The set is made, vacuum packed and delivered to your address with free shipping. Open the bags by hand and the foam expands. Duties or taxes may apply when goods enter the country; the notes on importing a majlis to the USA explain what to ask.
The state page, oriental Arabic jalsah in Texas, covers the rest of Texas. See also the guides for Dallas and San Antonio.
