Picture the usual Miami living room: tile underfoot, a wall of glass, a sliding door to a balcony and the air conditioning running most of the year. A majlis sofa in Miami has to suit that room, not a carpeted hall in a cooler country. The good news is that Arabic seating and a cool hard floor go together well. There are two products to choose from. The Arabic majlis in the photos here is raised: sofa-height upholstered units with a solid base, fixed backs and arm bolsters. The Arabic floor sofa is low: a seat mattress near the floor with loose back cushions, an ottoman and floor pillows. Sofhu makes both.
Condos and tile floors
Condos and tile-floored houses are the typical homes here, and both work with either product once a few points are settled.
The floor. A floor sofa has no legs or frame, so it does not scratch tile or marble, and a majlis rests on its upholstered base. The glass wall. Backrests need something solid behind them. Floor sofas are not freestanding, so the run goes on the solid walls and stops short of the sliding door.
The layout. In a condo living room that usually means an L-shape in the solid corner, as in the photo below, or a single row on the longest wall.

Heat, humidity and salt air: what to choose
Pick a breathable cover and plan to wash it. Miami is hot and humid for much of the year, and near the water the air carries salt.

Every cover zips off and can be machine washed at 30°C. That is the real defence in a humid climate: take the covers off, wash them, and dry cover and foam fully before reassembling. Terraces and balconies

South Florida’s Arab community is spread across Miami-Dade and Broward and is not gathered in one district, so there is no obvious neighbourhood to shop in for Arabic furniture. A dark majlis looks sharp on a light floor. Black velvet with gold stripes against veined marble, as below, is a strong look for a formal sitting room.
Whichever colour you choose, the cushions hold 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs. Denser foam generally keeps its height and support longer than light foam. Firmness is a separate choice, and Sofhu offers softer and firmer options.
