Every June the same thing happens. Families from Cairo and the Delta open the summer flat in Alexandria or the chalet further west along the Sahel, pull the dust sheets off, and find out what the winter damp did to the furniture. A majlis sofa for Alexandria, Egypt should be chosen with that morning in mind. Why the Arabic corner belongs in a summer home
Holiday apartments, chalets and beach villas along this coast often have an Arabic corner, the qa’da arabi: floor seating where everyone ends up after the beach. It makes sense. A low set seats more people along a wall than a three-piece suite, children sleep on it in the afternoon, and there is no frame to rust or swell.

Fabric for humidity and salt
Alexandria’s air is humid and carries salt. Choose by how the cloth behaves when damp, not by how it looks in a photograph.
- Linen. Sofhu describes its linen floor sofas as moisture-absorbing, with a porous weave that feels fresh in heat. It is the natural first choice for a room with the windows open.
- Woven and chenille. Hard-wearing and less prone to showing creases after a season of use.

Closing up for the winter
A short routine at the end of the season does more for the set than any fabric choice:
- Unzip and wash the covers, and dry them fully.
- Store the covers inside a cupboard, off the floor.
- Stand the foam on edge, away from outside walls and windows.
- Leave an internal door open so air moves through the flat.
