The question in Zurich is rarely where to put a majlis. It is whether a majlis sofa belongs in the apartment at all, next to a clean-lined kitchen and a wall of plain shelving. It can, and the result often looks more considered than a standard sectional, because every part of it has been chosen. This page is a short guide to choosing well.
Does a majlis sofa suit a Zurich apartment
Yes, if you think of it as fitted low seating and not as decoration. Zurich is Switzerland’s largest city, with residents of Balkan, Turkish and Arab background and a large international professional population. Some of them grew up with a majlis. Others have only seen one on their travels. Both kinds of buyer usually want the same thing here: the comfort and sociability of low seating, in a form that respects a well-finished interior.
A made-to-measure set has a real advantage over a sofa from a furniture store. It runs the full length of the wall, corner to corner, with no leftover gap. The comparison is worked through in majlis vs sectional sofa.

A room like the one above, with a sofa, an armchair and a coffee table, is the usual starting point. Replace those three pieces with one continuous run along the wall and the floor opens up.
Choose one module and repeat it
A majlis is built from repeating units. Pick the unit carefully and the room follows. The gallery on this page shows single modules photographed on white, which is the clearest way to compare them.

The ivory module above has a taupe damask runner down the centre and no other ornament. It is about as quiet as an Arabic sofa gets. At the other end of the neutral range is charcoal.

Charcoal velvet with a silver geometric band holds its own in a room with dark timber or black metal. When you compare modules, look at three things:
- The backrest. Channelled, tufted or flat. Flat and channelled backs look most contemporary.
- The armrest. Bolster, wedge or tray-top. Tray-tops double as side tables, which saves floor space.
- The base band. A patterned band adds interest at floor level. A plain one makes the seat look lighter.
More designs in this spirit are on the modern Arabic sofa page.
Every module shown here is an Arabic majlis in Sofhu’s sense: a raised, upholstered unit with a solid base, a fixed back and arm bolsters. Sofhu also makes the Arabic floor sofa, a lower set of floor-level seat cushions with loose backs and an ottoman, for buyers who want to sit closer to the ground.
Palette: take the colours from the room
High-spec apartments usually have their palette set by the architecture: the floor, the window frames, the kitchen fronts. Borrow from those. Grey, ivory, taupe and black are the easy choices, and beige, cream and grey majlis ideas shows them in full rooms. If you want one strong colour, use it on the seat and keep everything else neutral. The method is explained in how to choose majlis colours.
Fabric matters as much as colour. Velvet deepens a shade and catches the light. Linen and plain weaves stay matt. The series are listed on Sofhu’s fabrics page.
Living with other furniture
Many Zurich apartments have no spare room for guests, so the majlis shares the living room with a dining table, a desk or a media unit. Keep the seating on one or two walls and leave the others to the rest of the furniture.

The pale grey L-shape above shows the proportion to aim for: seating on two walls, a rug to mark the area and the rest of the floor clear. Practical advice on combining the two styles is in mixing a majlis with Western furniture.
Two facts to plan around. A majlis is planned against a wall, so it should not float in the middle of an open-plan room without something solid behind it. And the covers are removable and washable at 30°C, which makes pale colours more realistic than they first seem.
