The short answer

You will not find a majlis sofa in a Baltimore store; it is ordered from the manufacturer. Sofhu builds raised Arabic majlis sets and low Arabic floor sofas in Türkiye to the measurements of your room, in modular sections that pass through a row house door and up a narrow stair, fills them with 32 kg/m³ foam and ships the set free to your Maryland address.

People searching for a majlis sofa in Baltimore usually want to know one thing first: where can I buy one nearby. The honest answer is that this is not furniture the city’s stores carry. A majlis is made for a particular room, so it is ordered from a workshop and delivered. Sofhu is that workshop: a manufacturer in Türkiye that builds each set to the customer’s wall measurements and ships it free. It makes two products that are often both called a majlis: the Arabic majlis, raised to sofa height and fully upholstered with fixed backs, and the Arabic floor sofa, a low set of seat mattresses and loose cushions at floor level.

Is there an Arabic sofa store in Baltimore?

Sofhu has no store, stock or display in Baltimore or anywhere in Maryland, and this page will not suggest otherwise. What it offers instead is direct contact with the maker. You send measurements and photos, choose fabric and layout with the team over WhatsApp or a video call, and the finished set comes to your door.

For the wider state, see the Maryland page. For how buying from a manufacturer compares with a shop, the Arabic furniture store guide goes through it plainly.

Row houses and the case for modular pieces

Baltimore is a row house city, and a row house sets a clear test for any sofa: the front door, the hall and the stair. A conventional sectional often fails it. Arabic floor seating passes because it is not one object. A floor sofa is a number of seat mattresses, back cushions and armrests, carried in one piece at a time, and it travels vacuum packed so the parcels are compact. A raised majlis, like the burgundy set at the top of this page, also comes as separate units, but each is bulkier, so send your door and stair widths. The guide to how a majlis is packed and delivered shows what arrives.

The same modularity helps once the set is inside. Pieces can be rearranged, moved to another floor, or split between two rooms when the family’s needs change.

Choosing a layout by room

RoomLayout that usually fitsWhy
Narrow front living roomSingle row or short LKeeps the path from door to stair clear
Finished basementU-shapeThree free walls and no through traffic
Spare bedroom as guest roomL-shapeUses the corner, leaves the closet door free

These are starting points, not rules, and they hold for a floor sofa like the kilim set above as well as for a raised majlis like the beige one below. The L-shape and U-shape layout guide explains how to judge which walls can carry seating, and the majlis sofa set page lists what a complete set includes.

Who orders, and for which occasions

The Baltimore area’s Muslim community is centred on the western suburbs, around Catonsville and Windsor Mill, and refugee families have settled in parts of the city as well. Arabic floor seating appeals well beyond one background, though. It is ordered for a family room where everyone can sit at one level, for a guest room that sleeps visitors on the same cushions they sat on, and for the evenings when the house fills up.

Ramadan is the obvious one. If you host iftar, the iftar and Eid seating plan shows how to place guests and food around a floor set.

Fabric choices you can live with

Pick the cover for how the room is used, not only for colour. Sofhu describes its velvet as durable and easy to clean, and it gives the formal look many people want in a guest room. Linen is breathable and feels cooler in a warm room. Woven jacquards carry the classic medallion and stripe patterns. All Sofhu covers are zippered and removable, and can be machine washed at 30 degrees. The comparison of velvet, linen and jacquard covers the trade-offs in detail.

Under every cover is the same filling: 32 kg/m³ high-density foam with no springs. Denser foam generally holds its height and support longer than light foam, which is the reason to ask about density before anything else.

From measurement to delivery

  1. Measure the walls the seating will run along, at floor level.
  2. Note the width of your front door and the tightest point of the stair.
  3. Send both, with a photo of the room, and say which layout you prefer.
  4. Approve the quote and fabric. The set is then made, packed and shipped free.

Import duties or taxes may apply depending on the destination; ask Sofhu before you order. To begin, request a quote by measurement or message the team on WhatsApp.

Questions

Before you order

How narrow a room can take a majlis?

There is no fixed minimum that Sofhu publishes, because every set is cut to the room. In a narrow room the usual answer is a single row on the long wall, or an L that turns onto the short end wall, so the walking space stays clear. Send the width and length and you will get a layout proposal with the quote.

Does the seating have to sit against a wall, or can it divide an open-plan floor?

Arabic floor sofas are not freestanding. The backrests lean on a wall or another solid surface behind them. In an open-plan ground floor the set can follow the party wall and the front wall, or back onto a sturdy fixed unit, but it cannot stand alone in the middle of the room.

Can I get the same fabric for curtains and floor cushions?

Sofhu supplies curtains, rugs, ottomans and extra floor cushions as complements to its seating sets, so a matched room is possible. Say which pieces you want when you ask for the quote, and include the window width and height for curtains.

What happens if my measurements are slightly off?

Measure each wall twice at floor level, where the mattresses will sit, and note skirting boards and radiators. If you are unsure, send photos with a tape measure in the frame and let Sofhu check the numbers with you on a video call before anything is cut. A few minutes of checking is far easier than altering a finished cushion.

Is a majlis practical in a house with small children?

A floor sofa is, and many families choose it for that reason. The seating is low, there are no hard frames or springs in the cushions, and the zippered covers come off for a machine wash at 30 degrees. Darker or patterned fabrics hide everyday marks better than plain cream.
