A black and gold majlis looks formal, not heavy, when black is the main colour, cream or ivory takes about a third, and gold is kept to thin lines and one feature. Pale walls, a lighter rug and warm lamps at sitting height do the rest. Sofhu builds these sets to measure, so the amount of gold is your decision.

The usual worry about a black and gold majlis is that it will swallow the room. It will not, provided three things are right: the proportion of black to everything else, the lighting, and the walls. Black with gold is the most formal palette a guest room can wear, and formal rooms are the ones where proportion shows most. Start there.
The palette works on both products Sofhu makes, and the photographs here show both: the raised, fully upholstered Arabic majlis at sofa height, and the low Arabic floor sofa with its seat mattress at floor level and loose back cushions.
Getting the ratio right
Black should lead, a light colour should follow, and gold should come a distant third. A working ratio is roughly six parts black, three parts cream or ivory and one part gold. The cream matters as much as the gold. Without it, gold on black has no relief and the set reads as a dark mass with glitter.
The majlis at the top of this page follows that balance. Black velvet seats run along three walls of a cream room in a U-shape, the backs carry thin gold stripes, and the rug in the centre is cream. A carved arch niche gives the pale wall its interest. Count the areas and black is the largest, cream is close behind, and gold is only a set of fine lines.

A black Arabic sofa or majlis does not have to be black all over. In this apartment living room the majlis seats are light grey and the black is in the quilted bases, the star-shaped tables and the dark rug, under tall windows with grey curtains. Black gives the structure and the pale seats keep the room open. This is the modern end of the palette, close to what we describe under modern Arabic sofas. Add a line of gold piping and it becomes a black and gold scheme at its most restrained.
Gold: piping, embroidery or cushions
Decide where the gold goes before you decide how much. There are three usual places, and each gives a different character.
| Gold placement | Effect | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Piping and thin bands | Tailored, restrained | Living rooms, offices |
| One embroidered medallion or motif | A focal point per seat | Guest majlis |
| Cushions, fringe and tassels | Soft, movable, easy to change | Family rooms |
Use one as the feature and at most one more in support. Embroidery plus fringe plus gold cushions plus a gold base is a royal majlis design in the full sense, and it belongs in a large reception room with high ceilings, where it has space around it.

Pattern can carry the gold for you. This set is a floor sofa, not a raised majlis: an L-shape of low cushions in black fabric with cream and gold medallion motifs woven into the seats and backs. The matching ottoman sits at the centre of the rug as a low table, and the same medallion repeats across seats, backs, rug and ottoman. Because the motif does the decorating, the room needs no extra gold objects.
If you prefer gold as the main colour, reverse the scheme and use black as the line.

This room was refitted with a wall-to-wall majlis in caramel gold with black borders, marble cube tables and a key-border rug. It is a gold majlis with black as the outline, and it is warmer and lighter than the black-led version. Cream and gold, with no black at all, is lighter still.

A long reception room in cream and gold shows the scale this palette can reach: seating along three walls, gold fretwork bases, two medallion rugs and swag curtains. Dark accents appear only at the edges.
Lighting a dark set
Black fabric absorbs light, so a black majlis needs more light sources, placed lower. One ceiling fitting is not enough.
- Use warm bulbs. Gold thread and brass look rich under warm light and flat under cool white.
- Light at sitting height. Wall lights, lanterns and table lamps put light on the fronts of the cushions, where a ceiling light leaves shadow.
- Wash the walls. A cove or hidden strip that lights pale walls makes the black read as a clean silhouette.
- Let something sparkle. A chandelier, a brass tray or a glass lamp gives the eye a bright point. Our piece on mosaic lamps and Arabic sofas has ideas.
Velvet deserves a note. Black velvet shows every direction of the pile, so hard side light can make it look patchy. Soft, spread light is kinder to it.
Walls and floors
Pale walls and a rug with a light ground are what stop a black majlis from feeling heavy. Cream, warm white and pale stone are the dependable wall colours. Carved plaster, panelling or arched niches add interest without adding colour.
Floors matter as much. On a dark walnut floor, black seats need a rug with plenty of cream between them and the boards, or the bottom of the room turns into one dark band. On pale tile or light oak, black stands out cleanly and the rug can be darker. A rug that repeats the seat pattern, as in the floor sofa room shown earlier, ties the scheme together with no further effort.
Curtains should be lighter than the seats. Cream sheers with a heavier side panel in champagne or taupe frame a window well. Black curtains are rarely a good idea in a home.
Keeping it elegant
A luxury majlis depends on restraint and upkeep more than on the amount of decoration. A few rules keep the palette on the right side of the line.
- One gold feature per seat, not three.
- Repeat a single motif across the room; do not mix medallions, key patterns and baroque scrolls.
- Keep accessories few and good: one tray, one pair of lanterns, one large rug.
- Brush black velvet weekly. Dust is what makes a black set look tired.
- Keep the seat line level. Our sets are filled with 32 kg/m³ high-density foam, and the cushions should be rotated now and then like any others.
Where black feels too strong, charcoal or grey seats on a black base give the same structure with less contrast. Those rooms are covered in beige, cream and grey majlis ideas and shown in the black and grey gallery. For carved wooden frames with golden accents, see the Turkish majlis by Sofhu.
Planning a formal room with us
A formal room is measured more carefully than any other, because the seating has to meet the walls exactly. Send the wall lengths, door and window positions and a daylight photo. Tell us whether you want black or gold to lead, and where you would like the gold to sit.
Sofhu is the manufacturer, so stitching details and embroidery can be decided with the layout, as the custom majlis page explains. Sets are shipped free worldwide.
